I'm gonna be honest, I think v!Drift has just been playing dumb this entire time. I don't know how accurate this is to the character she is in Oakhurst, but I know it's accurate to the character she's meant to be (or, she was).

Murderers who aren't confident, who only killed once, who are scared of the consequences don't leave a damn trademark on their kill.

The killer Drift was investigating left a signature. They were smug, they were sure they weren't gonna get caught, they were toying with the investigators as much as they were toying with the victims.

But they felt threatened enough by Drift to go after her directly. Do you realize the meaning of that? Drift wasn't just threatened for being on the team. Drift was threatened for being Drift. Drift's reputation as a detective precedes her to the extent that a genuine serial killer felt the need to threaten her directly just to not get caught.

So. Maybe in Oakhurst, Drift isn't connecting dots that others aren't, isn't the absolute smartest who knows everything and misses nothing. But there is fucking something there and I truly hope to see it when Drift stops being terrified all the time.
