I had to explain to my Dad why Javert commits suicide. I tell him of the beautiful irony of Javert's situation: the man of the law, who's life is saved by the man he swore to capture. His purpose in life and honor broken, the only thing he could do was "swear...by the stars" and throw himself off the bridge. And my Dad stares at me, finishes his drink, looks out to nowhere and asks "But why couldn't he swim?"
