#Repost @drinking_in_cool_places McSorley’s Old Ale House - Established 1854 . @mcsorleysoldalehouse is the epitome of drinking in cool places. Where else can you drink in the same unchanged place that Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Houdini, Elvis Presley, and E.E. Cummings drank? . Some McSorley’s facts . 🍺 Only two drink options are served: light or dark ale . 🍻 One beer = Two mugs (with a thick head) . 🖼 All of the wall decorations have hung unchanged since 1910. They include an original John Wilkes Booth wanted poster, Harry Houdini’s handcuffs, and an invitation to the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge . 🐴 The floors are covered in sawdust, a tradition that dates back to when people would track in horse manure on their shoes from the NYC streets . 🦃 A chandelier above the bar holds lots of wishbones. Soldiers going to war had a tradition of hanging the bones in the bar, and would reclaim them upon their return. The ones remaining are from the soldiers that never returned. Some say this started for World War I, others think it started during the Civil War . ⚱️ Several former regulars rest enternally behind the bar . 🤫 The bar remained open during prohibition. Most were served “near beer” but a secret, foot pump tap might have provided regulars with the real thing . 👩 The bar was men only until 1970. The first women’s bathroom did not come until 1986 . ✍️ E.E. Cummings wrote a poem titled “I was sitting in McSorley’s”. A famous line reads “I was sitting in the din thinking drinking the ale, which never lets you grow old” . . . #mcsorelys #mcsorleysoldalehouse #oldestbar #drinkingincoolplaces #lightordark #since1854 #abrahamlincoln #johnfkennedy #teddyrosevelt #eecummings #elvispresley #harryhoudini #newyorkcity #beerstagram #beerselfie https://www.instagram.com/p/CYg_esjlxWA/?utm_medium=tumblr
