--     WHY HAD SHE   allowed herself to be so careless ??  concealing her feelings from him had been hard but she’d done it.   too careless, too comfortable.   had been sitting beside him as they ate,  watching from the corner of her eye as he enjoyed his meal.  normally he was so meticulous and even without trying managed not to get anything on him – meanwhile she was dropping crumbs onto her shirt and getting all kinds of things on her face.  and yet this time he’d managed to smudge something on his face, something on the edge of his mouth right near his cheeks.   without thinking, she reached over with a napkin in hand and swiped at it quickly, tutting with a little smile on her face.  and she’d laughed and said,  ❝man … i love you. ❞

            it carried so much weight and suddenly it was in the air between them.   he was staring at her,  asked her what she’d said.   she felt a wave of regret hit her instantly and her mouth turned dry.   no, she couldn’t repeat it but by the look on his face he had to have heard it.  she turned her head to the side, heart beating wildly.   perhaps she could still get out of this.   could still make it so their friendship,  the one she held so near and dear to her,   stayed in tact.   so that he didn’t hate her because she couldn’t BARE to lose him. not him. not him.

        ❝  i just said i love you – stop looking at me like i have four heads.  next time i won’t even tell you or help you when you have food on your face.    i’ll just let you walk around.. ❞

Lee breaks the news to Tenten --- Neji died during a mission.

–     SHE does not react as she so wants to.   what she wants to do is scream, cry, bang her fists against the ground, shout towards the sky in question as for an answer as to why,  why him, why so soon, why??  

         but she does not for she cannot in good faith break down while lee is in front of her,   tears streaming down his face,  wiping at his tears with his hand in a fist,  eyes clenched shut tightly, tears still escaping them despite him.  no,  she cannot break down in front of her.   he needs her.  needs her strength and she will find it in herself for him.  she reaches up and wipes at a tear with her hand before gathering lee into her arms to hug him and allow him to let out his emotions. it does not matter that the strength has left her at the same moment her heart did.  she has to be here for him. for her team.  for the family she has LEFT.
