How did Dale know if his human(?) family was alive or not? I'm doing another reread and this particularly caught my attention. Did it have something to do with his nature, or is that one of his powers?

It's always so cool to hear people are re-reading my stories 💖
If ur talking about part 5 where he mentions knowing a cousin is dead when no one else does, thats actually a really good catch.
Originally, the Depths was a lot more actual Hell/Afterlife rather than just sort of another plane of existence that the human world is on top of/connected to so there a few instances where he knew like, death related things as a demonic sign. I ended up moving away from that idea for a bunch of reasons and removed most of those references.
This one is more a forgotten thread. I had plans to make it so that cousin also was involved with demonic stuff and had been corresponding with Dale about all that, with them having some sort of 'if i dont hear from you in x weeks, i'll assume ur experiment failed and ur dead' agreed upon system. Then having some of her direct family be more suspicious of him or confront him about it. I think that might have been before I fully developed the whole plan with Grandfather's suspicions and ended up doing more with the main character's family in the second half instead of Dale's.
That's still what happened off screen so to speak, with maybe the cousin covering her tracks better so no one knows how she died. That makes it more a sign of demon!Dale having trouble with human!Dale's memories and not being as good as Dale at knowing when to speak up and what knowledge he can talk about. Luckily he did get better at that and learned to keep his mouth shut if he isn't sure/not volunteer some info without prompting.
Thanks for paying such close attention and sending in this ask! i love talking about Dale always lol ^^
