The Wicked Sound Playlist 2020/01/2

The Wicked Sound weekly playlist 2020/01/2 brings us some excellent jazz: debut single from Phronesis's double bass player Jasper Hoiby and his new project Planet B, a second single from Tortoise's guitarist Jeff Parker's upcoming album, and a new Moses Boyd's collaboration featured Poppy Ajudha on vocal. Jazz master Charles Lloyd in a live version of classic and Yazzmin Lacey singing on top of Jake Milliner instrumental. Lots of beautiful voices: mentioned already Yazmin Lacey and Poppy Ajudha, Jose James with a new funky song, Emily King and Sara Bareilles in an acoustic duo, and Celeste celebrating her BBC Sound of 2020 award with a new uptempo single. Some instrumental tracks from the world of funk music (Dr Rubberfunk) and abstract hip hop (FloFilz). And some edits as well - Chicago's Makaya McCraven reworked Gil Scott-Heron's last record, Leeds's Abstract Orchestra made instrumental versions of Slum Village and Thievery Corporation presents a symphonic version of their big hit. From The Collection : Part 1

As many of you will know, owning a record collection over a certain size requires no small amount of organisation, and I’m often asked how I decide what goes where on my stack of ubiquitous Expedits. One filing system would be too simple, so I use many - by genre, by label, by instrument, by format and by date last played (that’s the pile by the turntable) all get utilised, but after a bit of hunting on my shelves recently, I started to wonder if I could file them all autobiographically, like the dude from High Fidelity. Pondering on the memories linked to many of them, it occurred to me that I could turn it into a bit of a series for my blog. So, on the off chance that anyone else is vaguely interested in my ramblings about records, here’s Part 1.

I finally got round to watching the excellent documentary 'Beware Of Mr Baker' this week, a very enjoyable and enlightening film, with a great style, some stunning animation work and quality archive footage. For those that might not know, it follows the life story of Ginger Baker; drummer, addict and polo player, from his birth in 1939 to the present day. I’ve been listening to his playing for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until I got my first drum kit in the late summer 1987 that I started studying his drumming in detail. The popular Cream hits were already on my radar, but for Christmas that year my Uncle bought me this album : Ginger Baker - In Concert.

It’s an interesting collection of blues-based tracks, with some jazz rock kinda flourishes, and at the time, it wasn’t like anything else I’d come across. I recorded it to tape and spent many happy hours attempting to drum along to it with my headphones on, dreaming of a double bass drum Ludwig setup. The following year I got my Ludwig kit (albeit with a single kick drum!) but I’m still adding to my Ginger Baker vinyl collection. You should too.

Ginger seems to be on tour later in 2015, with a Washington DC and a London date on the schedule so far - catch him live while you still can!
