Based on a new study conducted by a team of infectious disease scientists of University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the healthcare market was not conducive for new antibiotics targeting some of the most dangerous and drug-resistant “superbugs”.
Based on the study, the current annual sales in US for the new antibiotics to treat Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) was about $101 million annually, which was short of the $1 billion. Furthermore, it was concluded, even if new anti-CRE agents were used to treat CRE infections, the market size was only $289 million.
According to lead author Cornelius J. Clancy, M.D., associate professor of medicine and director of the mycology program and Extensively Drug Resistant Pathogen Laboratory in Pitt’s Division of Infectious Diseases, if the market cannot support the new drugs against CRE, then it hints on the future of antibiotic development.
“Without antibiotics against increasingly resistant bacteria and fungi, much of modern medicine may become infeasible, including cancer chemotherapies, organ transplantation and high-risk abdominal surgeries,” he added.
Figures suggest, CRE infections cause 1.5 to 4.5 million hospitalizations globally every year. CRE is regarded as the highest priority pathogens for the development of new antibiotics. Furthermore, one of the biopharmaceutical company Achaogen was also declared bankrupt in April owning to significant losses.
Reports allege, new CRE antibiotics are prescribed to about quarter of infections that warrant them. Experts found a drop in revenue potential with financial difficulties faced by drug companies producing the new anti-CRE drugs.
“The prudent approach when fighting bacteria is to have multiple treatment options in the pipeline so that when resistance is inevitably developed to the current drug, a new antibiotic is waiting in the wings,” explained senior author M. Hong Nguyen, M.D. “But we found that market prospects will become even more daunting if more anti-CRE drugs are approved, which is bad news for infectious disease physicians and, more importantly, our patients.”
Study experts also added that clinicians and hospitals also need to adopt a different behavioral and cultural change in order to assure quicker adoption and appropriate use of new antibiotics.
