14, 24, 31? :)
14 What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?
That would be difficult to say, because there’s a heck of a lot of bad writing advice floating around the web. But I think the worst advice I ever got wasn’t even really advice; it was attitude. Back in college, I took a creative writing course -- I bet you know exactly what’s coming, don’t you? The teacher took one look at the first story I submitted, rolled his eyes, and said in the most condescending tone possible, “If you MUST write genre fiction...”
Make no mistake, the story was terrible, and I had a lot to learn about writing. But that teacher’s attitude immediately made me see him as an enemy, not an ally, and guaranteed that I would ignore everything he had to say for the rest of the semester.
24 Have you ever deleted one of your published fics?
I wouldn’t want to swear to it, but I don’t remember ever doing so. I’m sympathetic to writers who do so, for whatever reason they may have, but I don’t ever plan to go pro (I want writing to remain fun -- wrastling writer’s block is hard enough as a fan writer!) and my truly embarrassing juvenalia is moldering in the pages of ancient Elfquest fanzines that had a readership of, like, six people. Looking back, about the only ones I would be tempted to delete if they WERE on the web are a series of short stories I wrote about my and my future wife’s self-insert elf characters falling in luuuurve, because they’re just flat out boring and annoying to anyone who isn’t me or my wife. :D
31 Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?
I suppose that depends upon how you define canon compliant. My stories are set in a what-if AU which breaks off from canon after “The Gift,” and they take the characters in very different directions than canon did. So in that sense, they’re very far from canon compliant. I have nothing but respect for the craft of writers who create fill-in-the-blank stories that fit seamlessly into canon, but that’s not what drives me to write fanfic. I want to take the characters places that Joss couldn’t or wouldn’t take them, but I also want readers to be able to believe that the canon characters would choose go there. So I’m a stickler for characterization. Obviously, there is no way I’ll be able to sell every single reader on my versions of the characters. But my goal is to write in such as way that most readers, even if they aren’t necessarily a fan of my favorite ship or character, will be able to read my stuff and say, “OK, in this story, I can buy it.”
When it comes to worldbuilding, on the other hand, I try to hew as closely as canon as possible. Where canon contradicts itself, I try to come up with logical fanwanks to explain the discrepancies. Where canon flat-out makes no sense, I try to fill in the blanks till it does, without contradicting existing canon. (The backstory I gave to the Guardians and the Scythe in To Grandmother’s House, for example.) There have been occasions when I’ve gotten Jossed. Mostly they’ve been small things. For example, I started writing Necessary Evils before S7 started, and at that point, we didn’t know that the First Evil could only manifest as dead people. So in NE, I had it manifest a couple of times as someone living. When the “only dead people” restriction came up in S7, I debated going back and changing the scenes in question, but in the end, I decided that they were minor enough that I could let it slide, and/or come up with some reason why that particular character was an exception.
If it’s something bigger and more important, I will go back and re-write published fic, if necessary. I did that after LMPTM aired; I’d written a scene in NE where Spike talked to Buffy about what had become of his family after Drusilla sired him, and LMPTM completely jossed that. I thought that it held huge emotional weight for Spike’s character, and I just couldn’t let it go; I had to go back and re-write the scene and re-publish that chapter.
The comics have been an interesting challenge, worldbuilding-wise. My AU is so far removed from comics canon that a lot of it simply doesn’t apply, but there are a number of elements from the comics that I’ve ended up using. Like, the Seed of Wonder appears in my ‘verse, but completely different things happen around it, and I have the skeleton of an idea for Archaeous making an appearance, but for very different reasons than it did in the comics...
I was wondering how you'd rank the seasons of community best to worst? For me I'd probably rank it 3, 2, 1, 5, 4 (not factoring in s6 as I haven't finished it yet). <3
it’s been a while since i’ve watched the show all the way through, and i see it quite a bit differently now than i did when i was actively in the fandom. but here’s where i think i stand on rankings:
2 - contains my favorite episode, my favorite paintball, and the christmas episode is the best of its kind
3 - too short to be my number one season, but it is very sharp and fun. it gets extra points for the air conditioning repair annex storyline
1 - late season one is some of my favorite community, but it definitely scrambles a bit finding its footing in the first few episodes
5 - it’s all downhill after troy leaves, but there are still some delightful moments
4 & 6 - these two tie for last. the things i dislike about them are very different – s4 because, while the overall rhythm of the cast riffing is still in tact, the tone is all wrong and s6 because so much had changed but not in a fun way. it wasn’t a victory lap around greendale for our beloved characters so much as a glaring spotlight cast on everything good we’d lost – but equally off-putting.
Glory, Drusilla, Illyria, Darla, Lilah Morgan
1. Lilah Morgan. she’s one of my favourite things about ats, as well as my favourite villain/antagonist in the entire buffyverse. I didn’t really care about her at first but she entertained me more as the series went on. I was practically cheering when she killed linwood at the beginning of season 4.
2. Drusilla. I’m forever bitter about how little development she was given, but despite that I love every single scene she’s in. I’m also a sucker for a tragic backstory, and there is no one in the entire buffyverse who has one as tragic as hers.
3. Illyria. I’m not a fan of the ending of season 5 but i love what she brought to the show. I especially like her relationship with wesley. it’s kind unfortunate that she didn’t have much development outside of him but I think their conversations were really interesting. I just wish we got to explore her past more.
4. Darla. in the first two seasons of ats she’d definitely be higher than illyria but because of season 3 I couldn’t enjoy her arc as much as had before then. her s3 arc was disrespectful and hard to watch. other than that she’s definitely a super fun villain and I love all the flashbacks to her past.
5. Glory. not one of my favourites but I appreciate how she affected the storyline in season 5. her acting at certain times was a little over the top but she had her moments.
Put 5 characters in my ask and I'll put them in my preference order
Character meme- Rupert Giles? : 3
Why I like them A book-obssesed technophobe who drinks tea and is constantly facepalming (usually by cleaning his glasses or stammering, but it’s the same sort of reaction) what’s not to love?
Why I don’t He can be kind of a dick to everyone who isn’t Buffy. While he didn’t plan on it, or ask for it, he’s basically a surrogate paternal figure to Xander and Willow too, and while he’s usually good with Willow, he has little regard for Xander and ignores him a lot. His tunnel vision on Buffy had him ignore Faith’s issues completely, when as one of the adults, it would be his duty to actually notice (unlike Buffy & co) and he wasn’t all that great to Cordy, even when she was genuinely trying to learn about demons (that one scene where she’s asking questions and he’s just exasperated and acts like a dick)
Favorite episode (scene if movie) I can’t think of a speciifc episode offhand
Favorite season/movie Probably Season 5
Favorite line “Would you like me to convince you?”
Favorite outfit His tweed coat/jacket/thing, probably
OTP Calendiles, I suppose
Brotp Well, Buffy, obviously. I have much need for the BROTP that could have been with him and Wesley, as well, even if it never quite took.
Head Canon Giles has killed more humans than just Ben.
Unpopular opinion He really shouldn’t have kept in mind that while he saw Buffy as a daughter figure of sorts (”You have a father’s love for the child”) he wasn’t Buffy’s father and that while eventually it is a parent’s job to see their kid stand on their own (though maybe not by vanishing halfway across the world), he was also Buffy’s Watcher and he should have been that first and stayed behind to be Watcherly... or at least sent a replacement watcher to do Watcherly stuff for Buffy
A wish Well, the show’s over, so... n/a?
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen N/a
5 words to best describe them Smart, Idiot, Bookish, NERD, Badass
My nickname for them I don’t really do character nicknames, usually.

Fool For Love
Drusilla: I think we should see other people.
Spike: I don’t. We’re awful. We should leave other people alone.
Love your buffyverse-Hogwarts aesthetics <3 I was wondering what your reasoning behind putting Giles as a Slytherin was? I never really considered it before (I guess there is a danger of immediately stereotyping brainy characters as Ravenclaw) and thought it was quite an interesting angle to take : 3
Thank you! I’ve really enjoyed making the ones so far, so I’m glad other people like them too.
Ok, so on the Giles front, it essentially came down to a toss up between Ravenclaw and Slytherin, and I ended up deciding on Slytherin for a few different reasons.
Firstly, there’s the interest in dark magic from back in his teens and twenties. Regardless of anything else, witches and wizards with an interest in dark magic are, in the majority of cases, sorted into Slytherin. On top of this, Giles and Ethan both practices dark magic for their own personal gain and pleasure.
Secondly, Giles can be very ruthless and resourceful, which is epitomised in the scene where he kills Ben. The murder can’t be considered honourable in any way, it’s brutal and cold-blooded despite being carried out for the right reasons. In this situation, I believe a Ravenclaw would have spent time trying to figure out whether Ben and Glory could be separated, but Giles’ logic leads him to the simplest solution.
Thirdly, there’s this quote from the Slytherin page of the Harry Potter Wiki that I feel really sums up Giles’ behaviour in a lot of cases.
They also have highly developed senses of self-preservation. This means that Slytherins tend to hesitate before acting, so as to weigh all possible outcomes before deciding exactly what should be done.
While this seems to oppose my second point, I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive. When a quick decision needs to be made, Giles is perfectly willing to make it, but he can also spend ages researching in the hope that he’ll find a better option before it gets to that point.
As I said, Giles could really have gone either way for me, but I feel like Slytherin just about has the edge, so that’s why I picked it in the end.
