Final Clip!
Critique from Awatea McCallum
Callum's stop motion for the Caritas challenge is looking solely at the 'give it up challenge'. His main concept is the comparison between the objects that we have and take for granted in our everyday lives and lack of these objects in third world countries. The media that Callum is working with is pen on paper, I think that this minimalist type of stop motion will easily capture children’s attention, this is important because our target audience is of course children. His technique of not drawing completely new scenes for his back grounds and simply zooming in on the image to create the effect of movement within the background is very clever. I also think that a positive benefit of this idea is fact that it does not waste resources, this comes into play with the give it up idea as the children of the Solomon islands wouldn’t be able to just throw huge amounts of paper away they would make it last which is exactly what Callum is doing. Something that requires further attention would be the storyboard as I think it lacks in some areas that require more information. This could be established through more detailed drawings which would give the client more insight into his plan of attack. The story line for the stop motion is simple yet effective and allows for a good comparison in the end shots between what New Zealand children have and what third world children. This comparison at the end of the clip brings a more serious feel back into the clip as in the beginning it seems to not be too stern. This lets the viewer’s know that it is a fun challenge to be a part of but also that it is for a serious reason. Overall I think this will be a very successful project and has lots of potential.

Pictures and Illustrations
Awatea is using pictures and animated illustrations over these images. She aims to add effect of bright colours and childlike animations to grab the selected audiences attention. These will be incorporated with a wobbling cartoon-like outcome to build on keeping the audience interested. She wants to create a comparison between the children in New Zealand and the children in the Solomon Islands by using a figure with heaps of luxury items and slowly becoming minimal things.
I found the Idea of using pictures and drawing cartoon aspect drawings over the pictures really interesting. I found this interesting because it is original and it will grab the audiences attention. The target audience are kids and drawing animations over the pictures taken, makes the movie come to life and is more visually enjoyable for the audience.
My concern is that it’s hard to portray the message across to clients and other viewers. A completed and well described storyboard is an easy way to show your design attentions and how your ideas come together. The concept is great but it is quite hard to understand if you don’t have the tools to show this and without them your idea could become anything.
The transition between the two different children is great. I like how Awatea is going to show the ‘Give It Up Challenge’. The slow changing of a kid who has heaps of luxury items to being striped down to minimal things. This clearly shows the difference between kids here and in third world countries, also how that only giving up one luxury item is not as bad as going without things that other kids have to.
The concept and median are great and i know that this will become a good final product if Awatea continues working hard.
Caritas Intentions
For this project I have chosen to do the give it up challenge. I want to compare the third world items that they go without, with ours. The idea of the give it up challenge is to go without something that you think you cant possibly go without for 24 hours. This is important because you are only giving up one aspect for 24 hours yet people in third world countries go without these luxury items their whole lives. This challenge will help kids realize that giving up something Important to them, can be hard and will know how it feels to not have something that they use everyday. They will realize that you can live without these items but in third world countries they could possible be going without water or food, items to stay alive. I will make a stop motion animation to showcase this because it fits well with the target audience. The animation inspire kids to be part of caritas and make them feel like they are helping by doing the give it up challenge. I will look at comparing both sides, the third world children and the New Zealand children in this clip. This comparison will help get the message across that it is different in the world and that little things do count.
