Fluid Form Summary

My design was initially influenced by the curves/lines I found on images of yachts, the sails and the ropes. I also enjoyed playing with texture on the wire frame and using string to achieve this. The compositional strategy I followed was intersection, and how I could display half-curve half-line in my model. In my final model I showed this by having the string cut down through the top and bottom points. I also looked at direction; the curve of the shape follows the direction of the wire frame. The rhino paper proved difficult to pin into place on the frame, however. And by the time I reached my final model, I had run out of wire- hence it is scaled much smaller than I'd like. If it had been bigger, I would have included more spiraling curls up the direction of the wire.

Summary.

I really enjoyed project 2 of dsdn111. My transition technique was scale and I found it very interesting investigating with that different ways that I could show a transition with the scale. It created some really awesome looking things. I layered together lines that were 5mm different in size and created a twist that meet up in the middle. This also gave a nice look of transition in opacity as well, which I think added to the design. I focused on intersection as my design intention. I chose this because I liked being able to create two different parts and then make them join in the middle. I found it made the model more interesting rather then just one set of movement. One thing I feel I could improve on would be time management. I feel like I didn't get to explore enough with the relationship between the straight and curves, putting more time into that could have really strengthened my final. Overall I'm happy with how my model turned out and enjoyed working with new materials.

Summary

The main precedent image for my project was the flame of a candle. My model still effectively expresses the transition in shape of the flame while incorporating the idea of intersection. My model expresses this idea through the flow of the material through a plane creating a fluid movement. I learnt how to express my design intensions new materials and will be able to carry these skills on to future projects.

DSDN 111 project 2 'Fluid Form' summary

For this project I initially looked at the way smoke and air reacted with solid objects – particularly in wind tunnels. I was interested in the way that the air reacted directly to the solid surface it was blowing against while still not touching it, and also the transition from calm to chaotic expressed in laminar and turbulent flow. Thinking about this, I played with different surfaces, textures and densities in my materials – the lighter outer skin with triangles cut into it represents the wind reacting to, but not quite touching, the heavier rhino plastic beneath. The gridlines on the rhino plastic create a different texture revealed beneath the outer skins triangles and the wire, with its two spiral shapes, activates the negative space on the rear side of the form while the base spiral represents a simplified version of the curving form. The overall shape of the piece expresses transition from calm and smooth to chaotic and sharp - the smooth calm forms that smoke blowing over an object takes, while the sharp, thin ends of the shape represent the sharper, more chaotic tail-end of the smoke.

Review

I decided to base my form on gymnastics. This is because I see the sport as the perfect example of people emulating fluid form. Specifically I decided to focus on the way in which a gymnast transfers their weight in order to keep balance and the build-up of energy that takes place before any movement.  

In my first iteration I experimented with use rhythm to emulate the build-up of energy as well as the composition of elements to mimic that of the gymnast’s centre of gravity.

Throughout the iterative process I tried to experiment with ways in which I can try to incorporate the wire into something more than just a kebab, also I looked into the different effect the materials have on the form.

For m my final model I settled on rino plastic due to my fondness for its transparent qualities. I created 3 sheets out of the plastic and bended them in such a way that they made a semi sphere. Emphasising the way in which a linear component (the essentially 2-D plastic) can create a fluid form. Secondly I tried to emphasise the contrast by etching curves into the plastic and bending the wire into straight geometric shapes. Finally in my submission model I tried to illustrate growth through the composition and manipulation of the wire. (I looked into the transition of seed to sapling for this.)

Final Summary

For this project I created a form inspired by rotating waves and the layers they created. When I first began creating forms I immediately began manipulating the wire whilst exploring ideas, however, after some iterating I then went back to simply using a straight piece of wire and then later iterating again with wire which I had manipulated. I stopped manipulating the wire as I felt that I was concentrating too much on the frame of the piece and not enough on the actual curve. It was because of this that I was able to come to terms with the drafting paper and fully explore its possibilities without the added distraction of the wire. This may have appeared as though I was working backwards, however, I would not have realized the full possibilities of the wire in relation to my curved surface had I not ignored that aspect for a time. This thought pattern also helped me to appreciate the different materials’ possibilities. 

For this project the majority of my iterations were made using drafting paper, but towards the end of the project I found that Rino plastic worked better in terms of what I was trying to achieve. I found that the drafting paper was too flimsy and would not support the weight of the wire frame. The Rino plastic also portrayed my transitional texture in a more dramatic way than the drafting paper had.

I enjoyed this project immensely and was able to incorporate some of the skills I had learned during the first project into this one, making the process a lot easier. I find working with wire extremely satisfying and having the opportunity to use the wire to accentuate my curvilinear ideas really helped me learn about and appreciate the material.

Summary

I have used the design principles of visual movement and transition in my work. Taking inspiration from a fern frond I looked at a simple curving shape that I repeated to give my models a three dimensional quality and to frame space. When I realised this made the models appear static I decided to strip back the form until I found something that showed movement. I discovered in this project I often hit dead ends with iterations so that I had to backtrack and branch off in a new direction.

I enjoyed the process of exploring iterations through drawing but found that this did not always translate well into physical form, as I was not always able to make the tight bends in the wire as I had drawn. To achieve visual movement and transition in my design I used the strategy of rotation and found this to be a strong combination for my fluid form.
