“I know it. I know you know it. You know I know it.”
“Yeah I know.”
“Then why do you run from me every time we get close?”
“I don’t know.”
This was precisely what she was afraid of.
After her panic attack, they agreed to drop the subject for a while and have some dinner.
Then dinner extended to watching tv.
And watching tv extended to getting ready for bed.
And getting ready for bed extended to lying beside each other and blankly staring at the ceiling. Alas, Y/N broke the silence, and Harry (as usual) couldn’t put his feelings into words. But Y/N (unusually) wasn’t going to let him win this time.
She let out a gargantuan sigh and sat up, silently inviting him to do the same.
“It’s me Harry. I’ve known you like the back of my hand since you were 6. There’s nothing you can say to me now that will scare me off.”
“It’s not that,” he breathed, slowly sitting up to face her. “It’s just… I’m a bit… I guess…. afraid of… us.”
“Why?”
He opened his mouth to speak, but all he got out was a wavering breath. His eyes were welling with tears- not because he was afraid of being vulnerable, but because he knew that he couldn’t escape it anymore. No matter what, things were about to change.
She saw the tears threatening to spill from his eyes and her heart just about split in two. She couldn’t help but feel guilty for upsetting him, even though they both knew it was now or never.
“It’s ok. I know it’s hard. Just please don’t shut me out this time,” she whispered as she held his hands in her own.
He let out a few steady breaths, then it all came gushing out.
“I’m terrified Y/N. I’m truly terrified. You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I’m scared that I won’t be the best thing for you. I mess up all the time and if this happens I’m bound to do something to break your heart. If I ever hurt you I couldn’t live with myself, and if you leave me I’ll never find anyone else. You’re it for me and I’m scared.”
She had no idea what to say to him.
She knew he held her on a pedestal- heck, his own family reminded her of it every time they saw her. But she had no idea how much it truly hurt him. Of course she’d thought of the ramifications that could come with the relationship, but her love for him overpowered the doubt.
She pulled him into a tight embrace- her own tears making an appearance.
“Listen to me,” she said with what little voice remained. “You won’t be alone in this Harry. I’ll be with you every step of the way and we can work it out together.”
“I wish it could be that simple.”
“Who says it won’t be? If we really want this, it will happen. I’m not saying it won’t be a bit scary, but isn’t it worth the risk? Think of what our life could be like.”
“I think about it every day.”
“You do?”
“I do. I think about our house, our three babies, our cat and growing old with you. I just seem to think of what it’d be like to grow old without you more… and I don’t like it.”
“Well it doesn’t have to be reality.”
And in that moment, it hit him.
His Y/N was sitting before him.
The same Y/N that battles against her own mind and body every day, was sitting before him in complete confidence.
She had her own set of doubts, but she didn’t care. She heard his worries and knew of his many faults, but still wanted to give them a shot. By no means did his worries fade away in that moment, but for the first time in their long history, he was able to see past them.
“Some things are meant to be,” she grinned.
“And I think we both know that this is one of those things.”
She smiled up at him. Her eyes were still glossy and her cheeks were dotted with tears, but he could see the complete adoration she had for him in that moment.
“Only one thing left to do Styles.”
He chuckled through his tears and immediately began to lean in, but she quickly covered his lips with her hand.
“What’s say you take me on a date?”
“I suppose that could be arranged,” he chucked through her hand.
“Good.”
“Good.”
