When I Started Taking Family Responsibilities.
What’s a moment when you realized you were officially an adult? I truly realized I was officially an adult when I started taking on family responsibilities. It wasn’t about reaching a certain age or becoming financially independent—it was about understanding that my decisions now affected the people I loved. Taking care of responsibilities, making important decisions, being there for my family,…
"Do you think we're siblings in every universe?" my brother asked.
All the stars in the milky way shone down on us then as we lay side my side on the grass.
Their light reflected in our eyes and I said, "Every damn one."
oh na, dats big bro
my brother and i are irish twins, meaning there is less than a year between us, and he is my best friend in the entire world. my sister’s been quite mean to me lately, and my brother just picks me up when i’m down. he is my twin through and through and i will love him forever.
AIO? Can’t stand my brother sometimes
Background: I (29f) have one older brother (35m). We are an Asian family.
My brother and I used to be close when we were kids but now my patience is tested every time I’m around him, to the point where I usually can’t stand to be around him sometimes.
Since we were kids, he would always play fight/play rough with me in the way that I assume is normal for older brothers to do with their younger siblings. I.e. play punching, poking me, and just generally being loud and annoying. I’ve ***never*** liked it but just kinda tolerated it because he’s my brother and even though I complained my parents put very little effort in getting him to stop.
Now, even as adults he still*** ***does all those things to me and I **HATE** it. I can’t stand him not only invading my personal space like that and moreover, not respecting me enough to stop when I ask him to. Once, my patience was running so thin that I screamed in his face when he didn’t listen to me begging him to stop. He got upset and our parents got upset. Our mum forced me to apologise to him even though she admitted that he’s at fault, simply because he’s my older brother.
Since that incident, I’ve held a grudge against my brother and my parents. I feel like it doesn’t matter to them how I feel, they just want me to take whatever he dishes out. Every time this subject comes up I get lectured about how I have to love my brother and accept that playing rough and annoying physically is how he shows his love for me. And they wonder why I’m always short tempered with him. I don’t think he gets to treat me like that. We’re adults for God’s sake. But am I wrong, am I being too sensitive?
Reddit consensus: NOT OVERREACTING (NOR) (85% confidence)
Top comment: “NOR - He's 35 he should know how to respect basic boundaries at this point, crazy that you were the one forced to apologize”
Notable comment: “NOR. You are an adult and if you don’t want him to do those things to you. Then that is your choice not his or your parents. Start carrying your phone with you and when he starts doing it record it. Then tell him and your parents that if he does it again. You will be showing the police and making a report. You are entitled to your safety. And your mental, physical and emotional safety is your top priority. Also if he does continue doing it to you. Then do it right back to him. Yes very petty and most likely won’t make him stop. It’s just my own opinion. Stay strong and don’t allow him to do it again. Also don’t allow him and your parents try and manipulate and guilt you into allowing it to continue. And if you are able to record it. Tell them all if he still does not stop them you will be sending the recording to all their friends and family so they can see what he really is about and see how your parents allow it to happen. Best of luck.”
