Grammar
531. も顧みず/を顧みず (mo kaerimizu/wo kaerimizu):
Parsing: [Noun Phrase] {[mo- secondary particle] or [wo- accusative particle]} [kaerimizu(-zu negative)- verb]
Meaning: “regardless of NOUN PHRASE”
Example: “Aji wo kaerimizu kono keeki ga hoshii.” “Regardless of the flaavor, I want this cake.”
532. もしないで (mo shinai de):
Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(stem)]] [mo- secondary particle] [shinai(negative)- verb] [de- instrumental particle] Note: We say “Verb Phrase” here with the understanding that we have a participial phrase here and that participles are nouns.
Meaning: “without even VERB PHRASE”
Example: “Fooku wo tsukai mo shinai de keeki wo taberu.” “I eat cake without even eating a fork.”
533. もので (mono de):
Parsing: [Verb Phrase] [mono- noun] [de- instrumental particle]
Meaning: “because VERB PHRASE” Note: There are probably two ‘mono de’’s out there. One is the one indicating reason or cause, and the other is just a conjunctival use of the gerund of the copula “da.”
Example: “Mainichi keeki wo taberu mono de boku ga futotta.” “Because I eat cake every day, I got fat.”
534. ものを (mono wo):
Parsing: {[Adjectival Verb(imperfective)] or [Verb Phrase [Verb(past)]]} [mono- noun] [wo- accusative particle] Note: What we mean to say here is that if you’re using an adjectival verb, keep it imperfective. Otherwise, if you’re using a regular verb, conjugate for the past. Also, this “wo” is either a particular use of the accusative or a phrase that’s been truncated.
Meaning: “I wish VERB PHRASE” or “If only VERB PHRASE”
Example: “Uma ga ita modo wo.” “If only I had a horse.”
535. ものと思われる (mono to omowareru):
Parsing: [Verb Phrase] [mono- noun] [to- quotative] [omowareru- verb] Note: There is nothing particularly special about this expression, save that the quote is a noun phrase and not a verb phrase.
Meaning: “to suppose/think that VERB PHRASE”
Example: “Boku wa o-kashi wo taberu no ga ii mono to omowareru.” “I suppose eating snacks is fine.”
536. ものとして (mono to shite):
Parsing: [Verb Phrase] [mono- noun] [to- quotative] [shite- gerund verb] Note: If you have a Noun Phrase, use de aru. For the so-called na-adjectives, one can use -na as well.
Meaning: “as though VERB PHRASE” or “assuming that VERB PHRASE”
Example: “Boku ga kuma de aru keisatsu wa boku wo utta.” “The police shot me assuming I was a bear.”
537. もさることながら (mo saru koto nagara):
Parsing: [Noun Phrase 1] [mo- secondary particle] [saru- verb] [koto- noun] [nagara- conjunction] [Noun Phrase 2] Note: “saru” has the form of a verb, but standard dictionaries consider it a pronoun. It may have been a verb once upon a time and now functionally it serves as a pronoun. So we can both be right.
Meaning: “Not only NOUN PHRASE 1, but also NOUN PHRASE 2″
Example: “Keeki mo saru kotko nagara kappu-keeki wo taberu.” “I eat not only cake, but also cupcakes.”
538. もしくは (moshiku wa):
Parsing: [Noun Phrase] [moshiku- adverb] [wa- topical particle] {[Noun Phrase 2] or [Verb Phrase]} Note: This is most likely an old expression coming from an older form of Japanese that sticks around eve now. For our purposes, consider it an adverb that is also part adjective.
Meaning: “NOUN PHRASE, otherwise/or NOUN/VERB PHRASE”
Example: “Kanojo kanarazu jiipu moshiku wa baiku wo kau.” “She will definitely buy a Jeep, or a bike.”
539. ながらに/ながらの (nagara ni/nagara no): while, during
Parsing: {[Verb Phrase [Verb(stem)]] or [Noun Phrase]} [nagara- conjunction] [ni- adjectival suffix] [no(attributive)- copula/verb] Note: As with “you,” one uses ni when modifying verbs and no when modifying nouns. I should also add that there are a lot of established phrases that use no and it just happens to be that ni is more frequently used.
Meaning: “while VERB PHRASE” or “during NOUN PHRASE”
Example: “Boku ga biiru wo nomi-nagara ni taishou sarechatta.” “I was arrested while I was drinking beer.”
540. ないではおかない (nai de wa okanai):
Parsing: [Verb Phrase [Verb(negative)] [de wa- compound particle] [okanai(negative)- verb] Note: One can use a regular negative conjugation of the -zu negative conjugation, which follows the same rules as -nai. (So just replace once with another.) You’ll just be using the “ni wa” compound particle instead.
Meaning: “must VERB PHRASE” o “Cannot not VERB PHRASE”
Example: “Boku wa sono onna wo kisu shinai de wa okanai.” “I must kiss that woman.”
