A redraw of one of my favorite Star Wars comic panels, featuring Russ Manning’s screentone-based villain, Black Hole! Screentone is almost always applied digitally nowadays, so I really enjoyed this opportunity to use the old-fashioned physical sheets. I also used some fun paint and ink tricks to make the textures on Vader’s costume and Black Hole’s design. For my final redraw, I had to make another Russ Manning. There is no one better! And the image of the droids lost in space was the perfect opportunity to use every shiny and sparkly art supply I could find.

There’s not nearly enough fanart of these two incredible characters -- Ciena Ree and Thane Kyrell -- so I redrew this emotional panel from the middle of their manga. I thought it would be fun to add color and give Ciena another hairstyle as well. I hope you guys love them too!!

A redraw of some High Fantasy Power Couple concept art from Attack of the Clones! I wrote more about Anakin’s costume here, and more about Padme’s costume here. I would have loved if Anakin dressed up more, and of course Padme can never have too many dresses. These outfits in particular have glamorous Camelot vibes for me. But the details tie them back to Star Wars: the Vader-like chain on Anakin’s cape and the Leia-like buns on Padme’s head.

Happy Clone Wars Friday!

I just had to redraw the gorgeous full-page ending panel of Star Wars’ weirdest comic. It was a great opportunity to work with my beloved Yupo paper. Yupo is a difficult paper to use since it is extremely smooth so doesn’t absorb wet media at all, but as a result you can get interesting, unpredictable pooling effects. With a lot of layering and patience, as much wrestling with the media as cooperating with it, I finally got something I’m proud of. Here is another angle that better shows the shine of the acrylic ink and gel pens on the Yupo surface; you can also see a bit of my color testing space on the right of the page:

There’s a lot to love about Michael Murnane’s extravagant concluding panel: it’s the most imaginative take on Mustafar I know of, and the abstract colors and eerie details make outer space look more alive than any Jedi’s pretty words ever could. But my favorite thing about it is it gives the best reason to see Episode III: for the final fate of Wat Tambor!
