Had to #Repost these words from @lindanuves. It's nice to see gentrifiers enjoy our culture but we are people. We exist. We're not entertainment you can switch on and off. ・・・ The other day I woke up to some upsetting news. I learned that my fellow Chulxs in Austin had experienced discrimination at some venue ( @upstairsatcaroline ) that incorporates and is influenced by Latin aesthetics and cultural components. For members to be told to change, in their case, they were told to stop, the music because some people weren't liking it, is super offensive and very unsettling. I had to sit on this one because it genuinely hurt my feelings and I wasn't even there or experienced it. When you book Chulita Vinyl Club, do your homework! We play everything, including and not limited to music from our cultures, whatever that may be. So don't come at us by stopping our set, wasting our time, and projecting your bigotry for the sake of profiting for your personal gain. That's not what we stand for or what we are about. Power up to my fellow Chulxs for 1. Standing up for themselves in a male dominated venue 2. Rejecting the money from an establishment who wished to silence more than just the music but our voices & culture #eldiscoespolitico #eldiscoescultura • Thank you @superfonicos for your support in backing us up with the following statement: "Our Cultura needs to be respected and not just when it's convenient." #austin #upstairsatcaroline #chulitavinylclubaustin #chulitavinylclub #austintexas #dtaustin #downtownaustin #chulitavinylclubsanantonio As for the apology that they gave Chulita Vinyl Club, Im curious to see how they truly plan to rectify the situation or as they said "miscommunication", because they supposedly wanted uptempo music. Would they have had a problem with some merengue, salsa, or punta?
