A Dual nut / Coupling nut is a split nut that looks like a regular hex nut that is cut into two pieces for quick assembly and quick adjustment. The nut is divided in half by a plane passing through the axis of rotation.
This allows you to open the inner thread and place it around the outer thread. Therefore, it can be used to insert a nut into a nut that does not have an accessible end. Alternatively, it allows the nut to open so that it can move axially along the screw without relative rotation, and close in a new position so that the screw can move again. This is useful in positioning applications, such as lead screws on a lathe, to allow quick but coarse adjustments before fine tuning
