Summary: Years after he was disowned by the Jiangs, Wei Ying lives a quiet life working at a funeral home. Then he reencounters his former high school classmate Lan Zhan, who is planning his father’s cremation. Wei Ying won’t pass up the chance to get closer to his former crush, but first he has to hide all the brains in his freezer.
Kay's comments: So, this story is based on iZombie, which I haven't seen personally, but the important thing to note about this story is it contains casual cannibalism, because Wei Ying, amongst others, has the abbility to get a dead persons' abbilities, if he snacks on their brains. So! Super interesting premise, very unfortunate for him when he gets charged with a corpse desecration felony and gets kicked out by the Jiangs after helping out the Wen siblings. Ten years later, him and the Wen siblings are working in a funeral home and one day, Lan Zhan, his high school crush, walks in and wants his father's body cremated. Lots of family drama, found family, Wangxian being cute together and Wen Ning being the best bean! I really enjoyed this one!
Excerpt: Then he saw the newcomer and his thought process derailed completely. It was Lan Zhan. Wei Ying had known he lived in the city of course. That was the sort of knowledge of his high school crush that he couldn’t help but seek out. Did that factor into Wei Ying’s decision to move to Milwaukee when he needed a fresh start? Maybe. Who cared if it was kind of pathetic–no one else had to know. Lan Xichen had taken over running the family owned biotech company, whereas Lan Zhan had gotten a PHD in biomedical engineering, and worked as a researcher at that same company. Wei Ying was sure he was good at it. Wei Ying hoped it made him happy. And none of this information told him what to say to the man he saw in front of him. “Lan Zhan,” he said, with real affection. “It’s been so long.” Then he remembered where he worked, and shame colored his face. “Oh god, sorry. I’m sorry for your loss–or if you’re planning ahead…” he trailed off, “I was just surprised to see you.”
pov wei wuxian, modern setting, modern with magic, magical realism, cannibalism, inspired by iZombie, funeral home, stalking, gore, murder, dubious ethics, dubious morals, getting together, dating, reunions, xue yang being an asshole, lan family feels, good friend wen ning, set in america
