Character Appearance Help
dubiousrex asked: Character appearance is pretty important, right? Well I have a big problem with it. I just can't seem to do it right. I don't know what it is, but I can never properly picture my characters. They are always very simple in my mind and lack details about their clothing, hair, height, and sometimes their face. Whenever I do make a character they all tend to have similar characteristics in their appearance. Describing them is even harder than imagining them for me. I have a problem pinpointing their details, and I guess I'm also bad at descriptive wording too. Most of the time, the way I see my characters in my head is nothing like they would really look. (I usually know this through personality/history and other character info like that). There is one character I have that I know the appearance of very well, but I can't ever grasp what kind of clothes he wears, my mind just generalizes it. Long story short, I need help. Any tips on getting over this?
The first thing I would suggest is drawing your character. If you're an artist, just draw your character's face and an outline for the kind of wardrobe they would have. If you're not an artist but have friends who are, ask them for some help. If you're not an artist and you don't have an artist accessible, try these:
Create a Sim. You can either do this through the actual game if you would like, but if you don't want to spend the money on it, it seems as though you can download a Sims2 Demo from this website. If I'm not mistaken, all you'll be able to do is design the character, but not do anything with them.
HeroMachine - This is more for fantasy characters but after playing with it for a bit, it looks like it could also work for a rough outline of what sort of style your character would have.
Zwinky - This is one that I would definitely suggest. If you go to the homepage and just click 'Wardrobe,' you can mess around with the face and the clothes.
Since I couldn't find anything facial-feature-specific, I would suggest filling out the 'Physical Appearance' section of a character profile just so it gives you the chance to make yourself come up with definitive features.
