Dublin for Sam, Mayo for sandwiches! #COYBIB #DublinvMayo #allirelandfinal #SamMaguire #upthedubs
65 years of hurt to End? Whether you believe the curse of '51 is real or not, the years of wilderness is self perpetuating and the surviving members of that team must be fearing the big pillow in the next few nights. Mayo were seen at the outset of the year as the biggest dangers to Dublin but after a year of indifferent form they've been pretty much written off for Sunday yet this right now is their best chance yet. Forget Brolly and the whingers, gaelic football is in great shape. If we turned the national league into the championship and played it at the height of summer we'd be all raving about the standard of the game. This decade I've witnessed some of the greatest games of all time with Mayo, Dublin and Donegal producing their greatest ever teams with even the supposed transitional Kerry even claiming one All Ireland. In hindsight we could be reflecting on four of best teams of all time all beating each other akin to the current men’s tennis era or the four kings of boxing in the early 1980’s. However for that narrative to take hold Mayo need to win on Sunday. It's easy to say Mayo have no chance if they play as they have done so far this year but this is their first time playing a Division One side and I'm sure their game can and will rise tenfold. They have employed a more defensive system for fear of losing goals. It's still their Achilles heel again shown when Galway scored, they fell apart. However they have kept Tyrone & Tipperary scoreless and Dublin are happy to keep pointing as teams defend deeper. The danger is there that Dublin score a goal early and Mayo fall to pieces but I expect Barry Moran to only sweep if they have a big lead to protect late on. Mayo are the only side in the country that can match Dublin for athleticism and keep the scoreboard ticking over. Dublin have started on fire and everybody knows they have the legs and bench to last eighty minutes if need be. Mayo though shouldn't fear the Dubs one iota. Dublin are vulnerable to teams running at them at speed from angles, their full back line is nothing extraordinary and Mayo have shown just like Kerry in the semi final that they can rattle Cluxton. Watch carefully after Cillian O'Connor pops over a handy free as Mayo will push up here and force Cluxton into making a mistake. Mayo's kicking game has improved too under Rochford. At some point we'll see the twin towers approach with O'Shea and perhaps Moran in full forward for the high ball. These pressure points can all deliver goals and scores to keep Mayo in it. The biggest deciding factor will be the battles between Keegan & Boyle versus McMennamon & Connolly. My money is on the Mayo half backs to win those two mini wars and that is enough to predict Mayo will win their first All Ireland Senior Football Championship in 65 years. As it is I'd have made Galway 3 point underdogs against this exciting Kerry minor side.
