Things I love about this:

I couldn't decide which of these sections (both from the same page) I liked better so here's both. Gyro Gearloose is an absolute menace to society.

So I was looking through comics trying to piece together some timeline stuff for a fic and I realized something.

This is from Bum Bum the Masked Painter, from Topolino 2525, which came out in 2004. In it, BumBum explains to Gyro that he was the Masked Painter, a superhero that used to be very popular. Gyro seems fascinated and apparently believes him.

Fast forward a little to 2011. That's the first release of Paperinik and the Friendly Threat -- and we all know how that goes.

By 2012, Mads has his own body. By 2014, he faces off against...

...the Masked Painter. But he never once recognizes him or says anything about it being Bum Bum! The events of Bum Bum the Masked Painter were long before he split from Gyro, so he should have those memories as well. So I got thinking, this could mean a few different things (in-universe; I mean obviously the most likely realistic explanation is the writers just didn't think about it 😛): a) Gyro forgot what Bum Bum told him before he and Mads split from each other -- maybe one too many car-cans (thanks, Paperinik!), so neither Gyro nor Mads would realize Bum Bum's secret identity. b) Mads would remember this, but he was so focused on Paperinik, he never paid enough attention to the Masked Painter to notice who he was dealing with. But towards the end of the comic he does apparently start giving Bum Bum and Paperinik equal attention, soo...

That would seem to suggest otherwise.

And finally, my favorite interpretation:

c) Gyro never actually believed Bum Bum in the first place, so Mads doesn’t even consider that it could be Bum Bum behind the mask. The whole time Bum Bum's explaining what happened, Gyro's just politely going along with Bum Bum's story, pretending he believes him.

TIL that Newton is not the only nephew Gyro's had in the comics. In at least one story (Archimede e il nipotino peperino), he's got a rather bratty nephew named Gally Leo.

He's absolutely everything you'd imagine an obnoxious 90's boy to be like: backwards baseball cap, oversized clothes, constantly playing mean practical jokes and laughing at people.

He endangers a baby and an old lady, then promptly pisses off some cops.

At one point, Gyro locks him in and leaves the house. In response he...uh...eats the doorknob.

(I wasn't kidding.)

Then once he's had his fill of doorknob, he goes all Macaulay Culkin on the Beagle Boys who are trying to break in.

(These were absolutely not the highlights either but at that rate I might as well just share the whole thing lmao, it's just multiple pages of Home Alone hijinks.)

At the end of the comic, Gyro takes a rug beater and turns him over his knee for punishment which -- okay, wow, even in the 90s? But also what part of gentle Gyro screams "uses physical discipline" I mean seriously 😂

But anyway, it ends...happily? I guess? because before he gets his whoopin', Gyro becomes the next victim of his practical jokes, then abruptly decides oh well, never mind, and takes him out for ice cream instead. 🤷🏻‍♀️

As far as I know, this is the only story Gally appears in. I have to admit I’m tempted to try to work him into my personal canon solely because I'd love to see the interactions between Gally and Newton.

(While I think Gally's love of mean practical jokes would annoy the hell out of Newton, overall they're a bit more alike than I first thought.)
