Borough Market's Duck Sandwich
One of the many reasons the Duck Sandwich team loves Borough Market is the famous Duck Sandwich.
If you walk out the London Bridge tube station, down Stoney Street, past the juice bar on your right and the sausage stall on your left, you'll see a pub on a corner on your left, but don't be tempted by the prospect of a chilled lager whilst watching people running round carrying large bags of miscellaneous foods. Look right, there's the Duck Sandwich stall.
Although a bit pricey, the 5 pound butty is worth every penny. This is one of the only things on earth Andrew and myself agree on. Also one of the rare places we are happy to see a French themed stall, with equally French looking people. The staff generously slather ciabatta (a bit dry, actually, if we're being picky) with French mustard. They then throw on a handful of greens (rocket salad...) onto the newly mustardy bread. And then, it happens...
Using tongs, the stereo typical beret wearing, baguette eating character grabs a more than you can imagine portion of slowly frying equivalent-of-pulled-pork duck, and places it on the aforementioned ciabatta that is now ready to eat.
Although, here at Duck Sandwich, we are very much in to the latest greatest tricks and modern gadgets/dishes, there are some things that have to remain simple and easy. Getting your fingers, clothes and dignity stained and greasy as a consequence is part of the fun.
I don't know if Andrew agrees, but Borough Market's duck sandwich is one of London's culinary highlights.
Yes, it's got faults, but not bad for a bunch of frogs attempting (yet again) to make their mark on London.
There's a lot more to Borough Market, but that will come another time...
