Character breakdown: The process of turning a hot mess like Duela Dent into Arthur Fleck's ideal daughter for Manchäusen Syndrome!!
So, Duela is a character no one knows what to do with since the day she was created. I believe her only role in other media was in Gotham Knights, but since I didn't watch it, I'll be mentioning only comics Duela.
In the first draft for the still unnamed Joker 3 fanfic, the story would be about Tim Drake becoming Joker Jr. However, connecting him to Arthur was much more complicated on that premise, and I would have to rely much more on Lee to not break the canon. I was having quite the hard time with it, until I found about the iconic "Joker's Daughter".
Finding about Duela was quite the game changer. I always liked single dads with daughters way more than single dads with sons, so I was already inclined to her. As soon as I figured she was actually Two-Face's daughter, and Harvey Dent was already a stablished character in Folie à Deux, I was SURE that Duela was the way to go.
For her backstory, I pretty much used the OG Duela "feelings of rejection and desire for vengeance against Two-Face" plot, but in a much more depressing light than the comical "bullying Robin until he allows me into Teen Titans". With that, I had the first Duela's background with the New 52's Duela corrupted morals and idolizing of the Joker. It was at that point that the story started to take the shape it has on the final result.
I had quite a few options for her design, but I ended up choosing the red hair and heterochromia eyes, just like the Arsenal and Red Hood comics. Red hair seemed like the most common choice for Duela, and since Harley and movie Joker also heavily featured red on their palettes, I though it would match nicely with them, especially since I had already decided to use a monochromatic palette on her clown outfit. Her different colored eyes were kept as a reinforcement of her biological father's theme of duality, like she can't escape her own heritage.
The Pierrot as her clown type is meant to represent both her sadness and her misunderstandings with Lee, her Harlequin rival. The Pierrot also commonly displays black and white clothing, that reminds of both her Teen Titans outfit, and Two-Face's classic half black and half white suit. The mask ties in with her medical themes, but also pays homage to the New 52's Duela, who wears Joker's face over her own, with the drawn in X in the clown outfit representing how she is constantly silenced by everyone.
While short hair is the norm for Duela's designs, i opted for a overall boyish look, keeping her silhouette similar to Tim Drake's in the first draft of the story and also playing into how often the Joker's Daughter (or whoever she was pretending to be the daughter of) was mistaken for the actual original villain.
Arthur Fleck was always the kind to like children, and his desire to have a family was made clear throughout the second movie, so having created the Ultimate Joker's Daughter, their dynamic came to me very naturally from that point on.
Those are all the outfits she would wear through the story <3
Become who you wish was there for you when you were young <3
The local crazy clowns are staring at you. They look rather unamused.
