Oooo!!! 👀 So I took this… waaaaayyyy AU. XD I’m still figuring out Duke’s voice, and the easiest way for me to do that is outside the scope of canon, so here we are!! I hope you like it 💖

Jason turns away sharply, ducking his head to hide his blush and look busy. It’s him again. The Captain of Lord Wayne’s guard. He’s been stopping in every few days now, and Jason can’t help but hope—no. It’s better not to. Jason knows he makes the best baked goods in town. That’s the only reason Captain Duke Thomas has been coming in, even if he does linger longer than it takes to buy a pastry.

“Hello,” Captain Thomas greets pleasantly.

Jason turns around with a grin that’s a little more real than what he gives most customers. “Afternoon, Captain Thomas.”

The bakery always smells good, but Jason swears it smells better when Captain Thomas comes in. He has a nutty, woodsy kind of scent that’s much more pleasant than most alphas’ pungent musk.

“I trust you’re having an enjoyable day?” Captain Thomas’ eyes glitter at him. It’s not fair. Jason is fairly certain there’s flour streaked across his skirts, and at the alpha is standing there in full military dress looking for all the world like he’s ready to walk at the head of a parade.

“It is always pleasant when I get to see you.” Jason stops. Replays that over in his head. Then wishes for all the world he could run away and hide. He hadn’t meant to say that! Not out loud! He’s sure his face is flaming red for how hot it feels, so he quickly turns away to straighten up the stack of wax paper he uses to package his goods, missing the way Captain Thomas’ face brightens in delight. “What can I get for you today?”

“Do you have any strawberry tarts?” The Captain strolls down to where Jason displays his desserts.

“Yes, sir. I do.” Jason walks down to mirror Captain Thomas’ position from the opposite side of the counter.

“I’d like one of those, please, and two of your pistachio pastries.”

Jason quickly collects the goods and wraps them in wax paper, tying it off with a bit of twine and a bow that’s maybe more fancy than his usual utilitarian knots. “Ten pence, please.”

Captain Thomas reaches into the small satchel attached to his belt before placing two shillings and a small wooden box on the counter. “Keep the change.”

That’s more than double the cost of the goods, and Jason has to swallow twice before his tongue is willing to cooperate. “Thank you, Captain Thomas. I… I don’t know what to say.”

“Please, call me Duke.” Duke grins. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Jason.” He gives a quick wave over his shoulder before vanishing through the door, and Jason belatedly realizes that he didn’t wave back.

He puts the coins away, then picks up the little box, curious what’s inside. Lifting the lid, he’s greeted with a rich, spiced scent, and he realizes that it’s tea. Not just regular black tea, however. This is unlike anything he’s ever smelled before, and was probably imported from out East. This isn’t something you give to a random friendly acquaintance—hell. This isn’t something you give to a friend. This is… this is a courting gift, Jason realizes.

Something warm curls up in his gut, and he cradles the little box to his chest, breathing in that sweet-spiced scent again. Duke said he’d be back tomorrow. Maybe… maybe Jason can bake something special. The Captain seems to like a bit of everything, but Jason’s noticed that he’s partial to berries. Possibly macaroons?

The door opens to another customer before Jason can make up his mind, so he quickly closes and tucks away his box of tea and puts on a more appropriate smile. He’ll figure something out this evening after closing. That should leave plenty of time to plan and bake something special for tomorrow.

I'm stealing the subconsciously cuddly Duke because of how sweet it is omg!, I also like how you said Damian would "win" because of Dukes soft spot for the baby, but since I like to ruin things, this would make me think that some of the others would get increasingly desperate for some type of affection from Duke, mainly Tim and Jason, I like to think that the two of them would test the boundaries of what they could get away with. I feel like Tim would reach a point where he would just straight up crawl into Dukes bed at night and when others try to give him grief about it, he'll say he just sleeps better next to someone, and I feel like Jason probably would find out some of the places Duke likes to go alone via stalking and when they see each other Jason is just like oh my what a coincidence! and the others are like we know what you're doing you bitch

Anon I love this! Duke at first is uncomfortable especially waking up in his room in the manor (I'm imaging this takes place when he's under Bruce's care... Knowing Tim it extends past that point...) and Tim's just happily snuggled in his arms.

Jason slowly accidentally romances Duke because all of their "accedental" meet ups end up becoming dates. They casually hold hands when walking in the park, cuddle during family movie nights, and have nights in where they cook together.

It ends up becoming that both Jason and Tim start dating Duke with out realizing it until one night Tim sneaks into Duke's room to see Duke big spooning Jason. Jason and Tim argue while Duke's standing there like "I thought we were all dating??? Tim you saw me kiss Jason goodbye? Jason you saw me and Tim on a date at the aquarium?????"

I love them too. I know it's kind of crack-y since they haven't really interacted in the comics but I feel that they would have a great friends to lovers / idiots to lovers vibe to the build up of their romance. I thank the anon that introduced me to that ship.
