Forgive the shake-y (and sucky) video, but pay close attention to the lyrics. The song is sad and beautiful and so full of meaning, a performance I can never forget. #Dumagats #EthnicPride #Philippines (at Norzagaray, Bulacan)

An Advocacy! Helping others without expecting something in return ^_^
Dumagats a.k.a. DUMAGS
The Fellowship of the Forest (Part 4 of 4)
THE DUMAGATS OF PALANAN
SPECIALTIES: - Forest navigation and guiding - Portering anywhere from 10-30 kilos of load for days - River crossing - Identifying safe and suitable wilderness campsites and drinking water sources - Providing various trail options from point A to B: river crossing, creek wading, stone hopping, rock climbing, walking on aerial tree roots, balancing on fallen logs, ascending continuous 80-degree forest slopes, trail blazing on talahib and thorny ground - Lighting fire out of scrap wood in the forest, even on the rainiest day - Cooking perfect rice - Trapping wild boars and catching freshwater eels for emergency food - Summoning nightjars and freshwater turtles for evening photo shoots - Pitching A-tents quicker than Bob Acosta can - Laughing (the simplest things can amuse them), keeping it fun and really playing like kids after a long day of trekking, rain or shine
ROLE IN THE EXPEDITION: - As guides, providing safe passage for the 7-member reconnaissance team in March and for the 18-member main expedition team in April that traversed the Northern Sierra Madre forests and rivers from San Mariano to Palanan, Isabela and vice-versa, using what’s locally known as the ‘manok trail’ (now proposed to be renamed as the Leonardo Co Trail) - Portering supplies and sensitive equipment to be used in the expedition - Safety and security FEAR FACTOR: The river waters may rise alarmingly and limit our options in trekking, but there’s nothing more challenging for us than a visiting trekker disabled, or worse killed, by an accident in the forest or the river. We consider ourselves more than your trek guides, but your hosts; the Sierra Madre is our home and you are our guests.
WHY WE JOINED THE EXPEDITION: It’s an income opportunity for our clan, especially after the adverse impact of the devastation brought about by typhoon Juan to our forest and settlement. We support the intention of this expedition to commemorate Leonard Co, who some of us met and worked with in his projects to study and protect the plants of Palanan. We are one with you in taking care of the forests of Northern Sierra Madre. MOST IMPORTANT THING IN OUR BACKPACKS: ‘antipara’ (locally made wooden goggles) for catching eels in the river, and ‘posporo’ for building fire to keep us warm and to cook our meals.

In response to an early request, we do have the names of all the Dumagat guides and porters, but, decided not to publish them here in order to protect their privacy and security. They are strong and gentle, brilliant and unaffected, skillful and compassionate, agile and generous, quick and purposeful, wise and humorous. They are our teachers. They belong to the forest, and the forest belongs to them. The expedition team would like to thank the 15 Dumagats who joined this endeavor.
