Currently at a Super 8 in Dothan, AL. Surprisingly good - of course, it was the only Super 8 our entire trip that actually had positive reviews when I was planning our trip and reserving rooms for us. ;/
We took advantage of being in the south to stop at a Checker’s for their new Monterrey steak and bacon burger (it was alright), but between the persnickety old fart in the vehicle ahead of us, and the girl at the window not really knowing what she was doing, we were in the drive-through for 20+ minutes. And then after all that, I didn’t get a straw with my drink. So that was...something.
We also had an incident on the way down SR 231 that was eerily reminiscent of an accident I witnessed right in front of me years ago when I was still living with my parents in FL/in my mid-20s. Thankfully no accident this time, but my mother and I were both doing about 65mph, and this idiot pulled what I can only describe as a Jesus-Take-The-Wheel move and came barreling out across the northbound lanes through a gap in the traffic in those lanes, through the median cutout without even slowing, and came barreling out into the southbound lanes right in front of me. And then proceeded to do about 35 mph.
Thankfully, even loaded down as both our vehicles are, we were able to slow down in time and avoid rear-ending the dumbass. But it was close.
(The accident years ago in FL was because that idiot didn’t pull out in front of someone - he pulled out into the car that was traveling ahead of me.)
I always have to wonder what the insurance rates of people like that are like, how high they are, since they seem to put so much faith in other drivers on the road stopping in time to avoid a collision that they feel they don’t need to observe right-of-way and the law of yielding to oncoming traffic. There’s lots of them in Kansas City, too.
Two more days, and I’ll be at my mother’s house in Florida.
