Dumbledore knew that Harry had other places he could go, rather the Dursleys. Dumbledore knew there were people who could protect him just as strongly, and much more happily than the Dursleys ever could.

But Dumbledore needed his prop. Dumbledore needed that long term plan of the Horcrux hunt, and the fulfillment of the prophecy. He needed Harry clueless of the magical world and desperate for love and attention.

James and Lily are dead. First obstacle, eliminated.

Marlene, one of Lily's best friends, is dead. Second obstacle, eliminated.

Peter is "dead". Third obstacle, eliminated.

Remus, Sirius, and Mary. Three obstacles that needed eliminating.

Remus was easy. The man is so insecure of his nature, that just the right word play convinced him that Harry was safer with the Dursleys than him. And the courts would side that a werewolf wasn't fit to raise a child anyway. Fourth obstacle, eliminated.

Sirius, best friend of James, made the godfather of Harry; has complete legal rights to the child. Well, Sirius is under suspect for the murder of Peter and the Muggles Peter killed. A trial is in order, Sirius is scared and angry. A few words to the right people, with mentions of insanity and family background, and that trial was eliminated, straight to imprisonment no investigation. Fifth obstacle, eliminated.

Mary. The final obstacle. Lily's best friend, godmother of Harry. No past criminal or poor mental health record. A strong, kind, and gentle woman. Planned to be a mother herself.

Well, no one is around to truly remember her anymore anyway. And for those who do remember her and question where she went? Well, she just couldn't handle the pain of remembering.

Final obstacle, eliminated.

First stage of plan, complete.

Something always disturbed me about the  marauders. I don’t manage to believe that Peter Pettigrew has betrayed his best friends, because of a bigger desire of protection and safety(security). 

I want to say, we know all somebody who makes part of a group where he doesn’t really belong, but is it sufficient to betray them? He cause their death. I have a theory, we know all Dumbledore and hisdoubtful plan,and they always at his advantage,  even after its death. Then maybe Dumbledore was behind all this. By hearing the prophecy, he thought that it was he’s luck. He wanted a pawn capable of obeying him, but with Sirius Black, James Potter, Remus Lupin, Lily Evans and even Peter in his way, he would never make it. They were marauders! They were the marauders, they believe int Dumbledore, but to a certain extent.

Then if Dumbledore thought that for the greater good, they had to die? Every war needs sacrifices, which allows the population to collect themself around the same cause. What if this sacrifice was the Potter. The secret keeper was Peter, Dumbledore  managed to convince him it was the good thing to do. Peter was naïve, but he knew that this war needed something for the soldiers to fight for. What can be more perfect than a great family, loved by everyone, murdered? 

Then he decided to take everything on him. He lived the rest of his life in the enemy clan, every day when he crossed  voldemort, he knew that it was  his fault that his  friends died, were in prison, or alone. When he saw Sirius and Remus in the third volume, he decided to say nothing and to play his role, the one who betrayed them. It would have destroyed Sirius to know all of his misery was a plan of Dumbledore. 

I have never believed that Peter was a coward to the point of selling the only friends he ever had. I believe that it was a plan of Dumbledore and that Peter suffered all his existence to have been so naïve, to have believed Dumbledore’s plan.
