And not a single dumpling left...

It’s getting chilly over here at Is It Wednesday, and we are so excited to share this next artist’s work, perfect for warming up even the chilliest of winter days!
Today’s spotlight is on Dumpling Heart by Jade Feng Lee.
Updates: Periodically Recommended if you liked: Chef’s Table (Netflix), Cooked (Netflix), Delicious in Dungeon, Mãn (Kim Thuy) The Joy Luck Club (Amy Tan)
Jade’s website describes Dumpling Heart as “an ongoing collective project to document an inter-generational passion for food, and to explore the many creative possibilities in fiction inspired by food culture.”
Jade’s comics focus on traditional food and preparation styles that are often passed down from generations, rather than learned through a cookbook. Her comics deliver that information in a way that feels familiar, as though she is inviting you into her house to learn these methods that are familial knowledge.
The Perfect Dumpling is an emotional, heartwarming look into Jade’s experience with trying to recreate the dumplings she grew up eating. Through her own skills as an artist, she attempts to work through the frustrations and disappointments of not quite achieving the perfect dumpling she remembers making with her family in her childhood. This is my favourite of the comics she has available on Dumpling Heart because it sums up what her mission is with this web-comic series: to express her own connection to food and culture through comics.
In the recipe-comic Pork and Chives Jiao Zi, Jade explains her childhood experience with making jiao zi, goes over the recipe steps (including a “how-to” for mistakes that might occur), and finishes with an appreciation of the food’s completed, edible state. The best part of cooking, as Jade expresses, is when you can finally sit down and appreciate the food you’ve worked so hard to make!
Hot-Pot Winters brings the reader through the preparations and experience of sharing hot-pot. This comic is fantastic for the way Jade draws the different meat and vegetable options for hot-pot: they all look mouth-watering good and... I really could go for some hot-pot right now. Hot-Pot Winters is the perfect comic to get you in the mood to share this delicious meal with friends and family.
Overall, Jade’s storytelling is intimate and welcoming: her comics feel like an open door for outsiders to become temporary members of the family, without losing the importance of presenting the unique family history she brings to each comic. Her combination of autobiography and recipe-making reminds me of how traditional dishes are handed down through the generations, and Jade reaches across the internet through her web-comics to share her own knowledge while also inviting the reader to look into the important family experiences that shaped how she tells these stories.
