another thing i keep thinking about is jayDen being a picky eater. spitting out the pepperoni bc it didn't die in a fair fight. waxing poetic about how he doesn't want food that doesn't have blood on it. refusing to eat entrail stew because he hasn't represented his house in battle and hasn't earned the privilege of eating it. spitting out the raktajino sam made bc it was gross but being so nice to her about the fact that she tried. he's inventing dietary restrictions never before seen. i love him

with all the thought they put into the klingon lore in sfa so far i do still want to know why both klingon characters have surnames. lura thok refers to herself as daughter of Asmaret from the house of Dak'Hatas, which is how Klingons in previous trek typically identify, and she references her jam'hadar lineage of Kah-Baj. so given that neither klingons nor jem'hadar traditionally use surnames, where does the surname thok come from?

jayDen's mother refers to their family in general as "House Kraag", but the name itself doesn't come from any of his parents the way houses have typically been named for their leader e.g. The house of Martok, the house of mogh, or (briefly) the house of Quark. Is Kraag a hereditary surname? at what point did Klingons start using those? Given how long it's been and how much we know has changed about Klingon society I'm down for it, I just want to know why

the idea of the federation specifically being cut off from the rest of space is so delicious to me conceptually. okay so you cant explore but also you cant interfere in the politics of other worlds and you cant do passive space colonialism anymore. and this was inflicted on you with your own stolen weapons btw. idk if they'll commit and go through with it but WHAT a concept

i don't know what the budget situation is like behind the scenes or anything but I looove the way academy is being produced compared to other nutrek that seems to just be aiming to look as flashy as possible . writing the khionians to change forms in different environments so they can design a heavy prosthetic look for Darem but they don't have to use it every single episode is a great way of saving time and money. much of the main conflict is interpersonal so a lot of the action is just people talking in rooms, very much like older trek, especially this last episode with the emphasis on theatre and then the use of simple lighting tricks to make the kasq scenes look otherworldy. I'll have to double check but Im pretty sure when they're running the diagnostic on Sam, they just have her in fluorescent clothing and a strong light on her to make it look like her body is glowing solid white. thinking back to episode four they really shot a lot of jay-dens flashbacks in the woods and then had them talk about trading posts and other camps without actually visiting them, avoiding the cost of building outdoor sets/hiring + costuming extras/coordinating extra days of shooting etc. Just three or four guys in the woods. same for inventing khionia as an ocean planet and then having e7 take place on a very earth-like moon. I will speak ill of aspects of this show but you have to hand it to their cost-cutting measures, even episode 6 which is predominantly about a battle for a derelict spaceship has that battle primarily being fought verbally on a reused set between Paul giamatti and holly hunter. Genesis is a classic forehead alien . You love to see it

thinking about sfa and its recurring themes of trauma and linearity. invoking ds9 and benjamin sisko's ascent to the prophets, a relationship which started with the famous "you exist here"/"it's not linear". SAM's life-threatening trauma being resolved by giving her a second, parallel set of memories, seventeen years passing in a matter of weeks. nus braka taunting captain ake over how lanthanites experience time: "and if you never know, doesn't that mean he dies for you, over and over again, every day, forever?". caleb mir being in some way frozen at six years old, at the moment his life was destroyed, stuck as a "messed up little kid forever" as genesis puts it. of the adults in the cast, ake and the emh are centuries old and may live indefinitely, reno and tilly are displaced in time by almost a thousand years. you exist here. it's not linear
