July 15, 2022 - Dusky Starfrontlet or Glittering Starfrontlet (Coeligena orina)
Found only in a few small areas of western Colombia, these hummingbirds live in high elevation forests up to the treeline. They feed on nectar from a variety of flowers, as well as invertebrates. Little is known about their breeding behavior and only two of their nests have been described, both on rock faces around 10 feet (3 meters) above the ground. They are classified as Endangered by the IUCN due to declines in their small population from habitat loss and degradation, as well as climate change.
the dusky starfrontlet is a small hummingbird species found at high altitudes in columbia. this colorful species is recognizable by the teal patch on the forehead and small blue marking on the throat. like other hummingbirds, they feed on nectar and insects. sadly, with a small range and population, the dusky starfrontlet is critically endangered. x
