@dutifulsilence:
“Let me hold you until the nightmares fade.”
Nightmares were a constant part of who he was, something that never quite ended. There are days he could go without having them, where he slept peacefully or at least where nothing horrible happened. Then there were days where things were so horribly complicated and he woke up screaming, scaring the life out of Link and waking him from whatever rest he finally managed to have. And by some luck there were times where he had them and just woke himself up, without horrifying Link or any of the wild animals around them. Those days he walked around on his own, simply tried to silence his thoughts, tried to keep the world still for even a few minutes
These were, unfortunately, not one of the silent ones.
He barely even remembers what this one was about. He can see—red eyes, red hair. Can hear echoing screams, the sound of someone suffering, But then it was over and he found himself waking up with a screaming tearing from his throat and Link startling beside him. Reaching for the Master Sword, looking for a threat, expecting some giant Hinox to be tumbling from the forest about to be ripping the both of them apart. But no, it was nothing like that, it was just Sheik's head tormenting him.
There were no tears, no babbling apologies or haunting screams. He just sat there, trembling, breathing heavily and wishing for once that his hair was actually short. Since for some unexplainable reason every time he woke up his hair always felt to long and to heavy. He had even thought of chopping the braid right off one night, but Link had made such a horrified expression he had dismissed that idea immediately. He likes the braid, that was the first time he actually realized that. The first time he actually thought about keeping it long for someone other than his ancestors and himself.
Like every time he has done this though he felt horrible for waking Link up. It felt like the nightmares were worse and more frequent when they slept outside. When they were exposed to the wilderness and his sleep got increasingly worse for him. He already didn't sleep when he was out here, but the bit he did get was just never enough and never good enough.
He hears the Master Sword get placed down, the threat clearly not existing, and then the sound of Link shuffling a bit closer. He feels the Hero press up against his side, the arms that wrapped around his neck and the Sheikah easily leaned into the warmth that the Hero was offering. That comfort and reassurance that everything was fine. Nightmares weren't real, the ones that he had never even happened to him. He honestly didn't understand why they continued to effect him the way that they did.
“Let me hold you until the nightmares fade.”
Michael shook his head and leaned a bit more into Link, letting out a breath that felt as tense as he was holding his body. "I'm okay, I'll be fine. I'm sorry I woke you."
