Claire should have known this would happen, that she would end up alone. Thomas left her when he found out, and when she turned to her mother, she was only pushed away. Tears gathered in her eyes as she pressed a hand to her stomach, already swelling with the growth of her unborn child. She sat on a fallen log just outside the town, taking some time to clear her head and calm herself. Already, she was trying to come up with a plan - perhaps the owner of the local inn would be kind enough to allow her to work and stay there. That is, if the rest of the residents of the town didn’t shun her for becoming pregnant out of wedlock.
But perhaps some would still be kind to her - after all, she was well aware of the fact that it was a mistake, and she would take responsibility for it, no matter the fact that she was terrified. Claire would be raising this child on her own, with no experience, and with the fear that she would only be as much of a disappointment to her baby as she was to her mother and Thomas. As early on in the pregnancy as she was, she was already convinced that she wasn’t good enough to be a mother.
The sound of footsteps coming up the path snapped the young woman out of her thoughts and she looked up, wiping the tears from her cheeks.
