Hey remember when Amy had her entire life rewritten - her parents, then Rory and then the doctor were all wiped from history? And how all the episodes after that show how even though she can't remember it she is still deeply affected by that reality and wants to bring it back. How that will is so strong that she manages to do exactly that.

Oh and remember when Amy discovers she is suddenly pregnant and has a daughter, and she loves her very much but it's also clear how traumatic the entire experience is for her. Also she is still a character of her own after that - she still has significant relationships outside her daughter, still has a career, still travels with the doctor!

Not saying Amy's arc was perfect but it was a thousand times better than what they did to poor Belinda

i think you get ONE regeneration fakeout that brings back a beloved early nuwho actor instead of a new doctor. more and it becomes genuinely fucking ridiculous

also frankly i'm sick of this chibnall revisionism just because rtd2 is ass. "chibnall era was always so good and you guys were haters" no. no it wasn't and it still isn't.

even if rtd2 is worse than the chibnall era (i'm not sure i agree with this, at least not yet) that doesn't make the chibnall era good. 13 is still extremely out of character. the "fam" is still made up of cardboard cutouts of people. chibnall still introduced dhawan master, supposedly placed him after missy in the timeline, and undid a 3 season long character arc for the master in one fell swoop. the politics in chibnall's era were still dogshit. two writers can be bad at writing at the same time. two different creative teams can fumble the bag on doctor who.

there isn't one "villain" of doctor who. i know it would be easy if there was. but there isn't.

it's been a while since chibnall's era but you chibnall fans need to understand that even if you personally enjoyed it, it was still shit. the pro amazon episode and revealing the master's race to the nazis scene and "actually graham trying to comfort you about your cancer makes me feel kind of weird so fuck you" scene all still happened. this is out of character writing. that's not the doctor.

As someone who may have not been a DW fan since the dawn of time or whatever is apparently required these days, I'm getting a little pissed off by other online people saying that if you criticize this season or the NuWho run then 'you're just not having fun' or 'not everything is bad' or 'you always hate the show' because THIS WAS BAD.

It wasn't just bad, it was terrible, it was downright disrespectful to the fans and to the cast that RTD couldn't figure out a better work around in the plot for any of these characters besides a bad regeneration scene and nostalgia-bait. Literally everyone got the short end of the stick and we need to stop making excuses.

even if rtd was banking on using the incoherence and plot holes in ncuti’s seasons as a point in the narrative (which, to be clear, i don’t think he ever was and that all of this is just horrible writing), he definitely shouldn’t have done it when disney hadn’t even booked the third season he’d need to finish the arc.

like, my god, you need to be sure you can finish the narrative you’re writing.

even if there is some “grand plan” behind the misogyny and racism (spoiler: there isn’t), the fans are now not getting any resolution to it for 3 years, russell.

it feels like every major black character rtd writes gets overshadowed by or treated like shit by ten or his favourite blonde in some way. mickey, martha, rose noble, now fifteen. like, come on

I get where you’re coming from. I prefer to look more at how the narrative treats these characters and how the writer makes choices that make little sense or are weakly justified, just personally, because otherwise I just find myself getting mad at fictional characters when the problem is how they were written. A decent amount of time the narrative framed the way Ten and Rose treated Martha and Mickey as bad. My problem is that RTD kept circling around that drain instead of moving on, and if nothing else it became wearisome to watch Ten dunk on Mickey yet again when he learned in the Aliens of London two parter that Mickey is very intelligent and worthwhile.

It is painful as a poc to watch your favourite show and see characters of colour go through being repeatedly told they will never measure up to their white counterparts, in-universe, and never have the impact this might have on them as poc examined - because even when the people doing this to you aren’t being racist, when the whole world is telling you that you’ll never be as good as your white peers it hurts a certain kind of way when something reinforces that. I had plenty of experiences of things like unrequited love when I was younger where the desirability of white people over poc and my “rivals” for lack of a better word, being white, were parts of why it hurt so much. I love the line in Utopia “oh of course she was blonde” even though it could be interpreted as sexist, because I hear “oh of course she was a picture of Eurocentric beauty standards”. Tbh though this is a difficult topic to write and I’m glad RTD never tried to tackle it, as I doubt he would done it well.

And yeah, Rose Noble wasn’t mistreated but it’s always been a strange choice to have her name herself after Rose rather than Martha, who Donna was actually friends with. It’s making the mistake as a writer of assuming that your character feels the same way you do even when it makes no sense for them to.
