it is foolish to be nervous. after all, he'd been invited, had he not? the lady of the house - and perhaps more specifically, her daughter-in-law - had made a point of including him in the invitation to dinner. logically, he knows his presence is likely only to make up the numbers for cards. with eligible and acceptable gentlemen scarce, who better than the young physician to balance things? but he cannot not help but remember the conversation he'd had with the young widow the last time they'd met... it is reckless of him to linger on it so. their stations could barely be more removed from each other. and yet, here he stands, making his polite greeting to the hostess, all the while allowing his eyes to wander - in search of a certain fresh young face...

" so perhaps i shall hear you play after all? " he says, a knowing smile on his lips when he has at last approached her. " i confess i've rather been looking forward to the pleasure since our last meeting... "
