An adorable little anon asked for a tutorial on how I do my typography graphics, so here goes. Sorry if my explaining is bad, I’ve never done this before. I know there are tutorials floating around for these things sorry to add another to the mix.
An example of the finished product is here. I used a variety of the techniques I’ll explain here, but if you have any specific questions about one particular thing, feel free to message me privately.
Shoutout to shutupstrax for teaching me how to do this in the first place!
I have Photoshop CC 2014 for a Mac computer. I don’t know how applicable this is to other programs, but I hope this helps!
Start by placing the words you want on your canvas. Make sure you have the color, sizing, and location of the words exactly how you want it because once you start adding the animation, you won’t be able to change any of that.
Every piece of text that you want to move individually has to it’s own separate blog of text.
EX:
Next, you have to convert all the words to smart objects EXCEPT FOR THE WORD ANIMATION because you’re gonna add a text warp to that. Do that by right clicking on each layer individually and choosing “Convert to Smart Object”
EX:
Then, it’s time to start adding the animation. You need to go up to “Window” in the top bar of the computer and click on “Timeline.” Then choose “Create Video Timeline.”
We’ll start with the word “Text.” Click on the little circle next to the word “Transform” so that a little diamond shows up. That diamond denotes the position of the word.
That shows original position of the word. Click on the diamond and move it further down the timeline. Then, using command+t, flip the text around so it’s facing backwards. Another diamond should appear to say the text is different there. Press play and see if it’s a good speed and if it looks good!
The word “Animation” is going to be a little bit different because it’s not a Smart Object, and it’s gonna be warped. Make sure you drag the beginning of the word so that it lines up with the end of the last word so that it shows up when that word is finished. Instead of clicking the circle next to “Transform,” click “Text Warp.”
EX:
The first and last diamonds are non-warped versions of the text. For the middle diamond/text warp, do command+t again and in the top corner, click on the text warp button.
Choose the kind of text warp you want. ***If you don’t have the second normal text diamond, the text will stay warped and won’t go back to the original text.
For the word tutorial, since I want each set of letters to fly in separately, I’m offsetting each of the sections by 10 frames. I’m putting the diamond normal text diamond at the end of the letters, where the next letters appear. To make the words fly in, use command+t and drag the letters off the canvas and to the point from which you want them to fly in from.
EX:
To make the “Brought to you” bit expand, you’re going to use command+t again and move the top down and the bottom up so that it makes a thin line and you can barely see it. Click the “Transform” button there so that it is small and then can get bigger. Then go a number of frames later and, using command+t, make the text block it’s 100% height again.
EX:
Then you’re done animating your typography work! You can easily change the background; change the color or add a picture behind the words. Something like that. Now comes saving it so that you can post it.
Go to file»>save for web (command+option+shift+S). These are the settings I use for my gifs. Make sure that it is less than 2MB, because otherwise it won’t move when you post it on tumblr. Have fun making your typography animations!
