what i find interesting about dyatlov is how he represents the natural evolution of attitudes toward safety in an environment where blame and punishment take precedence over truth. he’s obviously an asshole but also this sort of accident (i.e. one caused by multiple failures at multiple levels as a result of deep rot & deprioritization of safety) was inevitable in an environment like the one he was operating in. in environments where safety and truth are systematically disregarded, people like dyatlov are bound to exist because their behavior is not only condoned but encouraged by the system & the easiest path to success in the system is one of domination, blaming others before you can be blamed, and normalizing unsafe deviance.

I've heard that the man speaking at 1:56 and 2:02 that is a higher pitch male voice, is Akimov. I found this going down a rabbit hole on Reddit the other night. I wish I knew where more recordings were.

76th Book I Read in 2023

Title: Mountain of the Dead: The Dyatlov Pass Incident

Author: Keith McCloskey

Notes: I've seen and listened to so many documentaries about this incident, it was really interesting to read a book about it. Especially since I found it by pure chance in a second hand shop!

If I had a nickel for every time the name Dyatlov was associated with a disaster in the Soviet Union, I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
