Third Gaze At first I just wanted to clean out my papers, but it turned into a short series of quick mixed media portrait paintings. Here my goal was to a) construct a face without trying to make it too realistic (the third eye probably helped with that) as well as the hands which otherwise I may exclude from a painting to its disadvantage; b) a certain character of brushstrokes and overall impression I like looking at but find hard to achieve myself, and c), stupidly, placement of elements on paper that I find hard without several preliminary sketches. My brushstrokes are okay, the placement is okay too; finding the subject with brushstrokes is something I always feel insecure about working outside of digital media where everything goes away easily. Especially using paper white to make full chroma paints glow like the hair here. Overall I like it though and feel encouraged to go on with this. My materials are Daler+Rowney system 3 acrylic paints as well as Lukas Cryl, ink pens from Faber-Castell and white Sakura Gelly Rolls. "Third Gaze", A4, acrylics and ink on Bristol carton.
