If you’ve encountered a setback...
Remember that all the work that you have done is not in vain. You’re still healing. You’re still growing. Setbacks happen sometimes and are a normal part of healing. Contrary to what some will say, this doesn’t always happen because we needed to learn a “lesson” or because we made a mistake. No. Sometimes there is an old trigger that we may not have known about. Sometimes, our environments and surroundings and the people there really are causing us more pain than we need, especially if we have been doing work to heal while still in the environment that originally hurt us. That takes strength. That takes courage. You have both.
Keep moving forward. Keep healing. If your will to continue begins to falter, remember that you are strong for even choosing to set out on this journey of healing. There is a part of you that knew that things like this would happen yet you decided to accept the challenge anyways. You made the choice to examine your life when so many decide just to keep on in their dysfunctional ways. Not you. You are taking on your unhealthy patterns and are actively bringing them into focus to be changed. That sets you apart from the crowd. You’re in a different league.
If you are being attacked for choosing to heal and are being told things like, “it won’t make a difference,” or that “therapy won’t do a thing to help you in life,” take stock of what actually stands true for you. Though you may feel like progress is slow for you, you likely still have milestones to show for your efforts. No matter how small, those milestones matter. These milestones are the evidence that your healing is making a difference and that what you are doing is indeed working for you. This is no accident. Your healing is important. Setbacks will happen from time to time, but you are so much bigger than those. The setbacks do not define you. Keep going.
If you heard this a lot while growing up, it’s very likely that you now or at some point have felt lost in your adulthood. The fact that you were forced to be responsible for things that were far beyond your concern as a child is unfair and you don’t have to feel bad for setting boundaries for your growth out of this conditioning.
