Jasper drummed his fingers on the scuffed tabletop he was sitting at tucked away in the corner, the thin gold rings decorating his fingers glinting even in the low light. He let out a sigh — Zoya should be arriving soon, and Jasper didn’t like to be kept waiting. The food, a fish pottage, was steaming on the table just in front of him, still too hot to eat — though that didn’t stop Jasper from dipping his spoon into it and testing the temperature. Deciding the food was still too hot to enjoy — one of the great things about this little hole-in-the-wall place in the Valley was its food being so freshly made despite being so cheap — he picked up the tea and sipped at that. His eyes flicked up when he heard someone sit down opposite him. “You took your time, sweetness,” he said, voice silky even though he knew it likely wasn’t going to work on Zoya. “And here I thought you’d be more eager.”
