Clive #holmes herbert #Dudley Digges #Harry Stubbs #Donald Stuart #Merle Tottenham #Frankenstein and Dracula might have had the greater impact on the pop culture landscape (and receive the critical acclaim into the bargain)#but my heart has always belonged to Universal's two other monster boys: the wolf man with all his angst and pain and emotional resonance #and Griffin the invisible douchebag; the polar opposite of Lon Chaney's Larry Talbot. Of all the monster cycle this is the film that most #revels in the horrific: Whale delights in Griffin's antisocial activities and murderous impulses and this probably has the highest body #count of any of the original cycle (particularly if we're including the disasters Griff is responsible for). Rains is wonderfully mercurial #in the title role as he cycles madly between irrational fury and gleefully sadistic. it's an impressively memorable performance given that #we see his face for a matter of seconds. of course another reason for that is the astonishing fx work (genuinely astonishing how good they #look nearly 90 years later). The bandage and dark glasses combo is rightfully iconic but that first look at the hollow space where his head #should be is still after all these years a moment of tingling uncanny horror...
