Bliss is this year’s new release from jazz baritone saxophonist Lauren Sevian, featuring a quintet that includes alto saxophonist Alexa Tarantino, pianist Robert Rodriguez, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer E. J. Strickland. The setlist is all Sevian originals with the exception of one tune by Tarantino and is pretty squarely in the groovy hard-bop territory of straight-ahead jazz. Really the only thing I knew about this before I bought it was that it had Christian McBride on it, but that checks out considering the kind of music McBride makes (most of the time). This is a really strong album, actually - no weak tracks and no weak link in the band. I really liked Triple Water, Bluesishness, Goldies Chance, and In The Loop quite a bit (that last one has a groovy funk beat to it that’s very fun).
