If Snow White Said No

Snow White loved her little cottage, She swept the floors day and night, She brushed away any cobwebs, Scrubbed the surfaces with all her might. Yes, she lived with seven dwarves Who were as messy as they were kind, But she liked to busy herself, So she didn’t really mind.

One day while Snow White cleaned She heard a loud knocking, She went to open the door And who she found was quite shocking, It was none other than the Prince Who’d heard of her beauty, “They told me you’re the fairest in the land And I have to say, you are a cutie, You won’t have to sweep anymore, Instead, I’ll sweep you away, You can live a life of luxury, Come on, what do you say?”

Snow White was stunned, “How dare you,” she said in a huff, “Come into my own house Telling me it’s not good enough! You can take your stupid palace, Give it to a girl actually who cares.” With that, she slammed the door And went to sweep the stairs.

Naturally Natural

"I'm not like the other girls", She says as she rips open her skin To let you in. "I don't try so hard to be liked", She says as she lets go Of things you'll never know. "Why should I change who I am?" She asks as she cries at blemishes That don't fit your wishes. "Why don't you love me?" She asks as you claim She's just not the same. Not the same girl you met Those few months ago When you said what you wanted, What you needed from her, She became what you asked, Ticked every box, But never knew those ticks must be natural Because natural's what you prefer. -E.M.J.G.

Pushing The Boat Out

Who needs a shore When there's an ocean to explore? As I pushed out my boat, I was barely able to float. But you were there to guide me, Keep me safe, keep me warm When I needed your help While I was lost in the storm, I don't need a lighthouse, A siren, or star, It's your light I follow, No matter how far. And when I lose my way Or can't make it through the day, I turn to you and you're there Anytime, anyplace, anywhere. -E.M.J.G.

A thought on experience

I've never claimed to be a good poet, I've not had enough of the world to know, Is it what you see or what you do That makes what we call good? Should I heal a frozen heart Or see a mountain asleep in snow? Should I drown in my own tears Or watch a town sink in a flood? I don't know what real experience is, Or how people come to have it, I've been told it comes with age As time takes over what you once controlled, From what I can tell it's a waiting game, But it doesn't happen to those who simply sit, It happens to those who can't sit still Because they can't do what they're told. I suppose that's a bit like me, My parents have always said I fidget, I want to move, I have to move, So does that mean I'll gain experience? Could you tell me if I'm correct? I've only had eight years being a double digit, So I have wonder instead of knowledge And more questions than I have sense. -E.M.J.G.

Small Word Expressions

I don't express myself with big, fancy words Or long and winding sentences Because big, fancy words are often forgotten And long and winding sentences are a confusion, That's my opinion at least. I remember that the word "verbose" Is a short word itself, Which further shows that many words Are not always needed, Sometimes it's the shortest of utterances That can mean the most, "No", "I love you" and "Thank you", Just to show a few. I may not have many large things to say And perhaps that makes me a bad poet, But I would like to think That maybe, at the very least, people understand. -E.M.J.G.

Ode to Spots

Dearest spots I’m sure We all need a resting place, But why oh why must you choose To rest upon my face, You’re there at my best, You’re there at my worst And choose the most awkward of moments To spontaneously burst, I try my hardest To scrub you all away, Yet try as I might it sadly seems You’re really here to stay, So thank you for your troubles, For the ones you’ve caused me, I’m being sarcastic here because Who would ever want acne?

How long?

For months you thought she was the one. You went to places you knew she’d be just so you could bump into her. At parties you’d get drunk and your friends convinced you into calling her. She’d just laugh and tell you to look after yourself, that your friends were idiots. When you finally plucked up the courage to ask her out and she said yes it was like you were flying. Nothing could go wrong from now on and you’d meet her almost every day just to spend time with her. At the bar you’d get drunk and call her to tell her how much you loved her. She’d say she loved you too and those words created such a feeling you never knew exisited. After she broke your heart it felt like your wings had been clipped and life was meaningless. Sometimes you still went to the places she used to go to, but usually she wasn’t there. At home you’d get drunk to drown your sorrows and call to say you still loved her and wanted her back. She’d sigh, tell you to stop calling and you could hear her friends giggling in the background. Now you say you’re over her and she was mistake in the first place. You’ve been going to places you know I’ll be just to bump into me. At parties I know you get drunk because your friends tell me all about it. You’ve never called me though and your friend said you called her the other night. So with all this affection you’ve been throwing my way, I just want to know one thing; how long will it be until I’m the one you call when you’re drunk?

Just two whole lives

Two whole years of holding hands and kissing in the rain, Just two months of living happily under the same roof, Two whole weeks of fighting and driving each other insane. Just two days of trying to stop the inevitable, Two whole hours of arguing about everything and nothing, Just two words, “it’s over”, to end it all.
