Céleste (they/them) and Verso fit far too well for this. As they wither away, Verso stays the same. One a fleeting memory, the other endless.

Summary of Céleste’s lore with Verso below the cut!

Céleste was never cut out for their expedition from the very beginning. If their illness couldn’t be helped they wanted to at least do something meaningful before they died. So they became the chronicler and researcher for their expedition.

Verso and Monoco show up to try and steer the group towards the Paintress, as they’ve tried many times before. But like many times before, disaster strikes and the expedition is scattered and decimated. Left alone, Céleste doesn’t stand a chance since they barely are managing while with the group

So they decide to abandon the mission, the expedition has no way to muster enough forces to take on the Paintress and unfortunately Verso has once again grown attached (especially because Céleste reminds him of Alicia in some ways).

Thanks to his Unburden ability, Verso’s able to ease some of their pain, but it doesn’t stop the wear and tear from building up and over time. And Céleste wants to make some sort of impact despite everything, so they refuse to rest, instead wanting to log all flora/fauna they can

Verso lets them feel like a person for once in their life, experience some of the simple joys without the ever present enemy of their physical pain. They have a good time together while they can.

At some point Verso divulges that he cannot die, something he will regret later for all totally different reason than he expected. As things get worse for Céleste and their condition declines, they have two requests- well, technically three.

They want: for this all to mean *something*, to be remembered, and for Verso to give them a painless death (because surely he knows the easiest way at this point). Verso makes good on his word, he passes on their journals, and after the deed is done, buries them in his graveyard.
