Self-Awareness 101: What it means to surrender in Yoga?
I have to be honest sometimes uprooting, we have to do again and again when it comes to context, schemas and perceptions. When I first thought of how the words “surrender” made me feel at one time it would have made me feel defeated, like I gave up or I had to quit it left a negative perception with me, maybe how I was exposed to it in the Western culture, even in my home, how did my mom view surrender to then implement to raise me? It can get deep if you want to swim, HAHAHA, with just words can trigger feelings.
When I was exposed to yoga and the content it shed light on how optimistic words can be when rephrased. It’s like being your own genie. You can say, “I got this” with the upmost enthusiasm or “I got this” with a monotone, and your head in the sand. It’s all in how we are vibing to be impeccable with our word. Whether you think you can or can’t, you are right.
From moment to moment there are constant opportunities to surrender. With free will in the mix it can get finnicky processing the world around us and having to be mindful of not to manifest hypersensitive behaviors that can lead to a domino effect within the body. Surrendering on the mat is more in depth than opening asanas and physical tension to let go of. Surrendering to something greater than ourselves opens up flow connection that readiness to receive can be expressed with the body being the bridge between heaven and earth.
We do our best in a world that focuses so good on the lows that at times putting in effort doing our best to be in control depending on what role you play in life, to surrender to control can bring ease and joy into our lives. Life unfolds unplanned. There comes a time when our light bulb comes on after the fact for example plan a party and nothing goes as planned being able to surrender to acceptance in that moment takes mindfulness to pivot and adjust. With practice surrendering on the mat, wax on wax off, Mr. Meyagi the practice starts to play out in the physical life. Surrendering to expectations is like food to the soul, its as if we were in our own way the whole time. Self-awareness is key when it comes to exploring for our paths what it may mean to “surrender” is to never give up but surrender to something higher than ourselves which can be linked to ego.
Change Your Perceptive and Chat (C.Y.P.) one layer at a time, one day at a time, then moment to moment it is can everyday process of these higher levels of conscious isn’t done by trying and wishing but by simply being. Yoga practice on any level requires faith and trust that whatever we are seeking is already within. Most situations that occur in our lives is out of our control. Next time you are thrown off track, take a moment to breathe deep and redirect your energy with intention, practice as such is opportunity for spiritual growth. Indeed, there are levels to this. Keep walking in love.
