“Better with you” 1/2
So I saw Jesse Mccartney in concert the other day, and though everything is burning hot and muggy, I started thinking of fall and all the wonderful things coming soon. So this snippit is thanks to Jesse Mccartneys “Better with you”
She was a damn coward.
Glancing at her phone again, she bit her lip and shook her head, yanking her backpack out of the locker to put back her washing supplies. Again she glanced at her phone on the bench in the locker room, a sigh racking her body as she snatched it up and shoved it in the pocket of her shorts.
‘Damn coward.’
There was nothing more she could think of besides texting Eagle. He had messaged her not long after they exchanged numbers at the bar, and they had a short casual conversation about meeting up again. Now she couldn’t bear to message him again.
Terrible self loathing thoughts constantly filled her head. What if he learned about her quirks and hated them? What if they pushed the line of friends and he wasn’t attracted to her afterwards? Len had been single for so long it was terrifying to think someone might want to break that single streak. He seemed so eager to spend time with her, what if she disappointed him? It would break her heart.
It would hurt less if she broke her own heart first.
Len slammed the locker closed and marched out, nodding to the only employee, the only soul, in the gym as she made her way out. Her favorite part of working out at dinner time was the lack of people.
At least inside. Outside there was still plenty of people roaming the streets, enjoying the night air as it was slowly starting to turn crisp. She took in the beautiful sight of the stars and sucked in a deep breath. Fall was just about here, her favorite time of year. Halloween decor was in stores, leaves were very slowly turning. Soon it would be time for sweaters and spook houses, not long after that would be ice skating and snow.
Speaking of, though the night wasn’t necessarily cold yet, the air nipped at her arms and legs. The telling sign of the season change. Normally she was perfectly content in a tank top and shorts after the gym and a shower. Not so much tonight.
Tucking her arms around her she began the long walk home, dead set on not taking the subway for as long as possible. Alternatively, she decided to take the scenic route by the park this time. Cold as she may be, She wouldn’t miss a single evening of her favorite season.
Though her apartment was far, the nearest park was not. And to her absolute delight, the park entrance was illuminated with gold and orange. As she got closer her joy grew as she noticed the park entrance was now appropriately decorated in fall designs, straw sprinkled and wrapped everywhere. The wonderful scent of sunflowers and damp hay filling the air. Once in front of the entrance she stopped, a smile spreading on her face as she read the plastic sign strung up across the entrance labeled “pumpkin patch and corn maze”.
“Awesome!” She sighed to herself, taking in the soft bulked lights dangling in crossed lines across the sky, from trees to light poles, just enough light to illuminate the entrance, and faded away as a wall of corn in the back covered the beginning of the maze.
A loud snarl and a heavily toothed face covered in blood and slime suddenly filled her vision, and Len jumped back while letting out a small squeak. Her back slammed into something warm and firm.
“Ahahaha! Would you two like to purchase tickets to our maze?” the man in the mask chuckled darkly with a fake gurgle in his voice. Len tilted her head back as a hand rested on her shoulder.
‘Oh for fu-’
“Yes two please.” Eagle said with a smirk down at her, passing the masked man a few bills.
“Wait I-” Len feebly protested as she was ushered into the small pumpkin patch area, Eagle gently guided her through the aisles of orange squashes, big and small round and oval, until they came to the hole in the wall of corn that marked the beginning of the maze.
“You didn’t have to-” Len trailed off, rubbing her arms as she eyes the creepy maze entrance, fake spiderwebs dangled from the corn, but more than that, looking in the direction the corn maze went, it grew to pitch black. A few flickers of light, most likely for distraction, but it was dark. Her body hummed in excitement.
“Your eyes were giving off fireworks.” Eagle chuckled. “Besides I... well I haven’t seen you in a while. I was glad to run into you... And find out you like this sort of thing.”
“Oh I love them!” Len beamed, her fists coming to her chest and shaking. “I love the thrill of being scared, I love horror movies and mazes and oh gods everything halloween!” She turned her grin on him, but it faltered when she saw his expression.
“You.... Do you not like this stuff?” Her smile turned slightly wicked as a blush crossed his cheeks. he awkwardly laughed and rubbed the back of his neck.
“I-It’s not that I don’t like it! It’s... I’m... Well I don’t hate them or dislike spooky stuff... I just...” Eagle sputtered to phrase what he wanted and Len let out a small giggle. Forgetting completely her reservations the past few weeks she slipped her hand into his and gave his warm palm a squeeze.
“Don’t worry I’ll take point.” She promised, slightly tugging him inside. “Oh wait...” Eagle stopped, and she felt slightly disappointed as he pulled his hand from hers. Was he going to back out entirely?Nope nope nope, all the worse, Eagle slipped his jacket off his shoulders, and Len felt her mouth go dry at the sight of his fitted t-shirt. She had felt his muscles a little bit when they danced together, but the shirt did things for her eyes. Clinging to his shoulders and biceps, the gray cotton accented that he definitely took his physical health seriously. And the way the cloth hugged his pecks, leaving just enough slack to not be tight against his abs which if she pictured-
‘By the gods stop oogling him like a parched dog!’ Her face burned as she slightly turned her head, trying to hide her expression in the shadows as he stepped closer to drape his jacket over her shoulders. The small action caused a waft of air to bring his smell with it and her mouth went from bone dry to almost drooling. He smelled like newspaper and like a fresh car engine, just.... utter man smell and it was completely her thing. Slipping her arms easily through the sleeves of the jacket, she felt butterflies as she felt the waterproof fabric tickle the backs of her thighs even with the backpack still settled underneath.
Eagle quickly slipped his hand back into hers as soon as her hands were free and he gave her a small smile “Lead the way little miss.”
