I have a very mixed relationship with Suzanne Rindell’s writing that I only realised was the case before I started Eagle & Crane. I DNF’d her debut novel - it wasn’t for me. Then I received a copy of Three Martini lunch in a book subscription box and it ended up being a five star read for me. However, I was still nervous. What would I think of this? Luckily, I’m here to tell you that I’m now a confirmed Rindell fan. This was another excellent read that although it wasn’t the full five stars, it came pretty damn close. The synopsis intrigued me from the outset as it follows a flying circus act in the WWII years in the USA. The act themselves consist of Louis Thorn and Haruto/Harry Yamada as they navigate their tricky relationship amidst the political tensions and climate of the time when Japanese residents in the US were interned in camps. Alongside the troupe are independent Ava Brooks and her mother who happen upon daredevils Louis and Haruto whilst their stepfather looks for a new way to make money. However, the story begins with a plane crash and the victims inside are thought to be Haruto and his father who are said to have escaped one of the camps. I loved how this story shifted across timelines from the present investigation from the FBI into the air disaster to the story of Louis, Haruto, Ava and their families. There are so many characters to explore and I adored how as a reader, I was kept on tenterhooks never really knowing exactly what was going on. There are certainly surprises in store and I was captivated every moment. The pages just flew by and I was rather sorry to leave the world behind as I finished. I can’t wait to read more of Rindell’s work and I’m so pleased I carried on reading after the epic Three Martini Lunch. She does not disappoint!
