Battlefield V hands-on at EA Play
Over at the Battlefield V section of EA Play there was a chance to try out one of the new Ground Operations. Grand Operations are the upgraded version of Operations featured in Battlefield 1. The modular experience sets the action across fictional in-operation ‘days’, where each day is represented by a round played on a combination of a map and a mode, such as Conquest, Breakthrough or the new Airbourne. This then brings the narrative to life and the actions you, your squad, and your team take on day one will have a direct impact on the narrative and gameplay on start of day two, which in result will impact on day three and so on.
For the demo we played the first 2 days of the 3 day Norway Grand Operation where British Forces are attempting to regain Narvik from the German occupation. The whole 3 day operation would typically take around one hour to play through depending on how competitive the match was of course.
For the demo we were able to choose between a selection of the reworked classes with different kits that have their own unique play style. I played mostly as the Grenadier …
Assault, Grenadier Archetype
Medic, Field Sergeant Archetype
Support, Engineer Archetype
Recon, Sniper Archetype
Machine Gunner for the Support class, Exotic Archetype
Day one featured the new game mode – Airbourne. I played on the British side where, as the attacking team, we parachuted down into the battlefield needing to locate crucial explosives and work together as a squad to plant them on the German artillery cannons. The objective was to take out as many German cannons before the day was over.
The opposing defending team needed to make sure the artillery cannons stayed intact. They had anti-aircraft cannons to shoot down our airplanes and could also build defences. There is a pretty cool new Build Tool which lets fortifications such as sandbags and barbed wire be added in set locations to thwart our advances.
As it turns out the other team were pretty good at building these defences and managed to make life very difficult for us by keeping the artillery cannons well defended and also setting up some good well hidden sniper positions. This of course then left us in all kinds of trouble for the following day.
Day 2 took place on the same map of Narvik but this time we started a little further back from where we parachuted in previously. The game mode had switched to Breakthrough so we needed to capture all sectors from the defending team before the day was over. To capture a sector you need to secure and hold all of the flags available within that sector simultaneously. There were some good places to take cover such as a train depot but heavy tank fire from our opponents meant some of this was short lived. We managed to capture several flags but ultimately, depleted from day one, we struggled to maintain them under our control.
Overall my time with Battlefield V was fun and the Ground Operations definitely adds another level to the multiplayer action to keep people returning. Visually, on the PC setup I played on, it looked very impressive too.
Battlefield V is set to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC on 19th October and is available to preorder from The Game Collection right now.
