My name is Eardley Bryan. My ex-wife’s great uncle was Herbert Pitman, Third Officer on the Titanic. He was approached by the author of the book “A Night to Remember” and told him that he was not interested in helping and later wrote to my late mother-in-law, his niece, “It is a lot of rubbish”. He is buried in the churchyard in small Somerset village. I have typed several of his war-time letters and they make interesting reading, but with no Titanic references, apart from that one remark about the book. I think that he felt that he did not want to have to go through it again, even though he did read the serialization of the book in the National press. Eardley Bryan
Visited Gallery of Modern Art yesterday to observe Joan Eardley’s inspiring show ‘A Sense of Place’. The exhibition was well laid out- mirroring her carreer as artist: from landscape to portrait oils, pastel and drawing work.
The work is appropriate to my own choices for my project I found- especially when taking the entire exhibition into consideration. I have come to strongly consider the idea of presenting representation or interpretation in environments away from where the place or subject for example originates. Eardley for example used parts of Scotland as her subject matter, like Catterline cottages for landscapes and Glasgow kids living around Rottenrow and nearby tenements. Presenting this work, as beautiful a representation of these places and people they are, out with their original surroundings provides a vivid effect for the observer. Similarly to the effect provided in a cinema screen in my opinion, the consumer or observer can use the experience, given that the work is effective enough, to escape from their surroundings and imagine the world represented in front of them. For me Eardley created some highly evocative pieces- her landscape oils were particularlybeautiful. She had a distinctive style.
I am keen to keep this theory in mind. I am leaning toward the idea of representing media based on New Lanark archives in a surrounding that is not New Lanark. The effect of which I hope might help the work stand out more, it’ll be as original as I intended for the work because it won’t be in surroundings that are familiar. I considered presenting the work in an educational establishment, like my own university.

League One side Northampton have signed defender Neal Eardley until the end of the season following his release by Scottish Championship club Hibernian. Former Wales right-back Eardley joined Hibs on a short-term deal in August, having been released by Birmingham at the end of last season. But the 28-year-old played in just two games for Neil Lennon’s side, and his contract was not renewed.…
