I'm curious: what's the secret history? I'm feeling quite uneducated right now, and that is so not going to happen.
The Secret History is a cruel mistress, an instrument of fate, its readers' sin and soul: it is a 629-page arrest, described equally in terms of everything from Brideshead to Crime and Punishment to Euripides to Bret Easton Ellis. It is fine wine with a lifelong hangover attached: it will obsess you, infuriate you (not least because why can't I write something like that); immerse you in the Classics and torment you until you learn Greek; unrelentingly plague you with its characters and their arcs and their excellence and awfulness until you dream about them, write about them, probably end up buying a piece-for-piece replica of every outfit in which Francis bloody Abernathy is ever described, for God's sake. The Secret History is a goddamn pestilence, and it's glorious.
In more practical terms, of course, it is a book by Donna Tartt. Which I enjoy considerably? <3
