a time i was too high at a party:  the carpet was red velvet cake, leaving icing on the bottoms of our shoes, until we baked into the couch and had thumb wars with elbows that wouldn’t balance on knees, and feet dangling above saturated red. the butter knife i pulled out of my back pocket still smelled like store-bought cheese; we didn’t have crackers, but we laughed and laughed, because evanescence played and we still couldn’t solve one side of the rubik’s cube. there was a snake cage for a coffee table that we had kept kicking, not noticing solid space or the only light in the room. we never left the couch, but we talked of worlds we had lived in, and worlds we had not, until realizing 3:30 a.m. was not a normal time to stay in a house you didn’t live in.
