She searched
she searched everywhere
in the space
between the bedclothes
and the morning light,
between last night's stubs
and the coffee beans,
between half remembered dreams
and the closet,
by the time she dressed,
she'd forgotten
what their connection
looked like

The gravity of unclasped fingers
our legs are conversing
tapping out morse
down the cobbled history
of one last attempt
at together
my fingers twitch
in the sleeve of air
where our ghost hands
once clasped
the reverie
of untarnished metal
a little star
seesawed an arc
to delineate
where two contours
were a merging
pointillism
loneliness measured
in an arms breadth
of walking
in the exact
same direction

How to be romantic in your forties
we're a little heavier now
unrefined sugar
and wholewheat flour
you know, homely
takes more than a little
baking soda
to make us bounce
and that's ok
like marathon runners
we pace ourselves
avoid excessive expenditures
of energy
quality over quantity
that's our new mantra
eight good minutes
is nothing to be sneered at
it makes for good economics
don't even need to shower
just a dab and a spray
acceptance is the key
to romantic longevity

When poems migrate south
i.
the blue sky
shatters like a million
grains of rice
that should never
have been thrown
ii.
my eyes are dry
and the thought
of ice cream
sickens the empty
parking lot
at my centre-
too acerbic
for long term permits
iii.
i keep a safe distance
from kitchen utensils
like a baby
drawn to shiny destruction
iv.
i want to learn
how quickly
the blood abandons
its home-
like you
v.
i'm unschooled
in this ritual of alone
